Hi,

Just looking for a bit of advice.

I bought a Nikkor 18-140mm 3.5-56 VR lens from Portus Digital this week. It arrived this morning (a two day turnaround from placing the order), well packed, but devoid of any Nikon packaging - just the lens wrapped in a plastic bag, bubble wrap, and in correctly sized cardboard box with the lens description handwritten on it. This was all packed in a larger shipping box with more bubble-wrap and polystyrene pellets. There was no documentation at all with the lens though. I know Portus sells grey imports so am wondering if they have a batch of these kit lenses that have been unbundled from the camera kits or something, hence the lack of official packaging. The lens itself works ok and appears brand new, so I have no issues with the product itself, and I've successfully registered it on my Nikon account using the serial number on the lens.

So, my questions are:

1) Has anyone else bought lenses from Portus, and is this the way you received yours?
2) I'm presuming the lens is covered under a standard Nikon worldwide warranty now I've registered it on their site?
3) I'm presuming that it's also covered by a Portus 2 year warranty based on my date of purchase? My invoice was received as an email and the lens will show as a purchase on their site.

Thanks,

Nige

1) Not bought from them but it is often similar when buying a lens which has been part of a kit.
2) You can register almost anything on the Nikon website (except something previously registered and not de-registered) so that in itself counts for nothing.
3) What warranty was shown when you bought the lens?

I've just contacted them to find out. Apparently it IS a kit lens separated from the kit, hence the lack of standard Nikon packaging, and it's covered by a 2 year warranty from Portus themselves (with any repairs being carried out by AJ Johnstones in Glasgow). Not sure if it's covered by Nikon themselves though - the guy at Portus didn't say it was.

Nikon have a worldwide warranty on lenses, so you should be ok + the 2nd year with portus.
