As many know I have been experimenting with Mrs Wheels and Kids doing home portraits, I so far have not produced anything worth printing and putting in a frame. This is the set up I have does it all have potential to make a simple studio for family portraits?

You want to atleast invest in some cheap speedlite flashes which will be far better then those torches your using for a light source, I think that is your first hurdle.

If you want to get some good quality shots of your family get a flash.

Easy cheap set up would be
Speedlite, RF-602s, Light stand, Cheap softbox & Coldshoe.

After you've got those you can look into something Like Zack Arias one light there are some snippets on youtube save buying the full thing or read up on single light portraits then go from there, maybe use a plain wall or something outside.

Definitely some potential there.

There are some very interesting ideas for basic studio equipment from plumbing pipe here.. might give you some ideas on how the rails could be modified further.

A couple of flashes and a trigger set would be useful.. the RF-602 trigger set is cheap and reliable, and the Yongnuo flashes are also good value for this type of work.

Experiment with DIY light modifiers instead of buying off-the-shelf softboxes, etc.. it's a bit more fun to see what you can achieve. The Svarteld lightstands look easy enough to knock-up.

Would this work ok with my camera and sb900 both on remote??
