I am thinking about attending a Portrait workshop and wondered if anybody here had any experience or recommendations as to which companies offer the best value for money, I live in Cheshire but am willing to travel.

I have looked at the ones offered by GoingDigital as they have fairly local workshops.

Value for money... It depends on your budget...

My first portrait course was with Simon Young - excellent tutor and photographer - https://photography-coach.co.uk/

The course was run at the blackthorn school though I think that has gone now??

Do what I did though - look for a photographer who trains and whose work you like. I can thoroughly recommend Simon if he's your style. Simon will teach about how to interact with the person as well as some of the technical stuff.

There are other excellent photographers - Damian Mcgillicuddy (https://www.damianmcgillicuddy.com/) / Andrew Appelton (http://www.appletonphototraining.com/) who do training courses and are widely recommended - but look at the style and what you want to learn.

I'd suggest narrowing down what you want to learn and finding a course which specialises. Portraiture is a huge subject - from street portraits to kids to fashion to art nude.
In particular think about whether you want to learn about lighting, posing or generally interacting with your subject, and whether you want to work with models or non-models.

My best tuition has been 1-1 with local photographers - quite a few advertise tuition services. Some of the worst has been group workshops with very high profile glamour / fashion / fine art photographers.

Unfortunately there's no easy way of finding out whether a good photographer is also a good teacher.
