So after a bit of lurking on meetUp.com I decided on a portrait hands on type meet that seemed to be pretty interesting I did a write up for my blog but ill just post it here for anyone who's interested
So a few weeks ago I decided I'd give MeetUp.com a go, having been in the market for some photography based workshops and the like for a while I was pretty overwhelmed when I first signed up! There are tens of groups all focusing on portrait photography. So with only twelve quid on the line for one the next weekend I though I'd give it a go. . .
Well it seems I picked a popular event, or a lot of people got DSLRs for christmas

, but the event soon filled up and even had a waiting list!!!
The MeetUp its self was scheduled to be outside the National Theatre in South Bank, and despite apple maps best attempts at sending me to the Tate modern I managed to find a likely lot of camera bag carrying people outside the theatre

It turned out to be a large group, 23 in total, with a large range of experiences and gear from beginners to pros and from 3/4ths systems to medium format film cameras! The tutor was a few mins late but then again it was a sunday so London's usually impeccable transport system can be excused ( BTW if you think public transport in london isn't amazing try living in 90% of the rest of the world!!!).
Once everyone was seated in a quiet section of the Theatre's cafe it was down to business, the organiser / tutor went through a number of tips and tricks type things. Now if you were after a very in detail 'this is the shutter button' type day then you would be very disappointed, for me this worked out great because it was more about just getting out there and trying out taking some portraits with other people. Assignments were given after the brief talk each with different targets, we then split into groups and had a go for 45mins.
This was the bit I was most looking forward too as I really just wanted some confidence shooting people, the friendly atmosphere of the group was great for this!! The organiser came round to talk to each of the groups and had a brief word which was nice.
Then we reconvened and had a short chat about what we had just done before going off to try some other things. After another session shooting the group met up a final time for a chat, I headed home at this point as I'd been out the night before as well as worked during the day so needed a nap
Overall I found it very useful and I greatly enjoyed the afternoon for 12 squid you can't go wrong really, I'll certainly be trying out some more 'MeetUp's in the future!!
