Hi Guys

Iv been asked by friends of friends to take some portrait shoots of their family. Which of course, I am fine with.

What I want to know is that some of these families have small children - am I required to have a CRB check to be able to photograph them?

It hasn't been asked by any of my clients, but would just be nice to know to make sure I cover myself first and formost.

Thanks in Advance

Not unless your alone with the children but most togs have one to produce well I do anyways it's a simple process and can save hassle down the road.....

No, I wont be alone with the children. As this is only a serious hobby at the moment, I didnt think about getting one, but if this becomes more frequent for me then I will get one.

Can you CRB yourself?

Why would you need a DBS check to take pictures of your friend's children?

It isn't illegal to be alone with children.

That

there is no legal requirement for a photographer to have a DBS check at all (and the DBS themselves are trying to trim the number of unecessary applications).

That said Hospitals, schools, play groups, scout organisations etc are required to have DBS checks done on their staff and anyone who has regular unsupervised access to the children in their care.

Everything else is brought about by media hysteria and parental paranoia - people who photograph children as their livelihood often feel that they need one, because clients ask for one - however in reality they don't other than the implied need of the client asking to see it

(its all b*****ks anyway because having a clean DBS doesnt necessarily mean that someone isnt a paedophile, it could just mean that they havent been caught yet, plus something like 80% of child abuse happens within the family - weird old uncle walt, or mummys new boyfriend, is far more likely to be the perpetrator than a visiting photographer)

^This.

If you're worried about your kids, then look closer to home and stop demonising everyone who wants to work with children.

The other mummy forum myth is "yerbut if the photographer is a wrongun he could take the photos of my kids and add their faces to child porn " The irony here is that the same mummies who worry about that happily post 100s of pictures of their kids on facebook, twitter, instagram etc.

Now the harvesting of kids faces to refresh porn does happen ( and incidentally the FBI say that its mostly not done by paedophiles but by people purely intersted in the money :puke: ) but if you think about it, is it more efficient for a paedophile refresher to pose as a family photographer, or simply to use the google image search from the comfort of his desk ? ...

Not to mention probably being the type who drive their kids to school while using the phone/drinking coffee/putting on make up etc... which I see every damned morning and makes me want to pull them over and punch them in the face.

Exactly - the ones that really get me as the ones putting on mascara using the rear view mirror while driving ... I mean how the hell are they watching the road :bang:

You forgot to mention they then stop on the 'No stopping' zone outside the school to drop the kids off, because they haven't figured out how to actually park their car properly...

The world has, indeed, gone mad.

There's a school near me that has put up a whole row of A-frame boards along the curb in the zig-zagged area saying "Parking here endangers children's lives", but they still do.... "Oh I'm only dropping him off" they'll say. Yet they'll still go mad if a man with a camera was seen within half a mile of the school.

tell me about it, we actually built a path up to our local school so that parents could drop off in our carpark instead of driving up the very narrow lane to drop off and endangering other kids lives - but they still do it, Tarquin and Felicity can't be expected to walk 150 m up a hill :bang:
