Portrait lens for D700

So for normal studio work, unless i want to print massive canvases etc i would be better off getting something like a 50d, e30, a700, d90 etc etc and getting a few decent lenses then?

for portraits in studio use d700 and nothing but a good old 50mm 1.4 g stunning image quality pin sharp dotn use zoom apart from landscapes.

Would 50mm on a FF be too close though? , i know 35mm (equivalent to 50mm on FF) on an aps-c seems very close
 
The D700 is a wonderful, wonderful camera to base a Nikon system on, but it all depends on whether you can buy the focal lengths you need within your budget.

Based upon your budget of £2k, your price of £1450 for a D700, and if you were to look at the 2nd-hand market for lenses you could add some very nice lenses such as the likes of:
  • Sigma 70-200 f/2.8 (£400)
  • Tamron AF 28-75mm f/2.8 (£200)
  • Nikon 50mm f/1.8 (£80)
  • Nikon 85mm f/1.8 (£200)

If you ever decide to move out of the studio and into shooting in low light then the D700 will shine and allow you to get some stunning results.
 
Personally, I'd get the D700, the 85mm f1.8 and then hire a couple of other primes for a week or 4 in the meantime until you know yourself what sort of lens lengths you'll want. It's pretty certain you'll get the 85mm at some point though.
 
Not getting the D700 would be a crime. As for lenses, yes the 85mm is a good call for that body and is about right for portraiture without breaking the bank. 50mm is a too wide for this IMHO.

Did a shoot over the weekend with the D700 and I used my 24-70 2.8 primarily with splashes of 85mm 1.8.
