Hi!

I'm looking around at some Nikon lesnes to fit my D300 and want a good portraiture lens, for outdoor work and studio. I have the 70-200, but it's sooo heavy to use!

Any recommendations? A zoom would be nice as opposed to prime but i'm open to advice :)

Really hard as you have the versatility of the lens you have being able to get close up or take shots far away.
what are the typical focal lengths you take portraits at?

That is the main question, how do you like to shoot?

On the little sensor cameras something like a 35-105 range would cover the commonly liked portrait lengths. My fave portrait lens is a 300 f4 though, so there is no one answer. :)

I like to use my 60 AF macro or my 50 AF both nice and crisp pictures.

Zooms will be heavier, especially if your going for quality.

If you don't mind getting in closer, the Sigma 24-70 f2.8 is a fantastic lens, so long as you get a good quality one. I compare Sigma lens when I buy them, so I usually make sure a store has 2 of the same lens at least.

Also worth looking for a second hand 28-70 f2.8, an amazing lens. If you have the money though, the newer 24-70 f2.8 is even better.

85mm f1.4
or its cheaper cousin,
85mm f1.8
Very popular focal length for portraits, and legendary lens.

All of these work well with DX and FX, and you should research them all, and try them out I think.

I do portrait work and use a variety of lenses namely

50mm f/1.8 - will be upgraded soon to the 1.4:woot:
85mm f/1.8
17-70 f/2.8-4.5
150mm f/2.8

the main reasons for this line up is i get the sharpest (affordable) range. I do prefer primes i have learnt to move about much more and think about the shot more with primes.
down sides it means carying alot of kit with you.:(
