Hello,

How does one take a portrait, where the backround is black, and one side of the face is LOST to the shadows, and the other is subtly lit?

Have seen it a few times, but can't find an exmople...

There's another in my gallery. I have tonnes of test shots involving them, using the techniques you wanted to try and do. Will the technique be used for your gas mask shots?

I have already done a few gas masks shots, fading into a black background, howeverm its the side on I was struggling with.

OK, well it should be the same thing. I noted what settings I used under the devart link I posted. It didn't matter whether I was using a black or white background. The lights connected to the flash prevented any lightness in the background, resulting in the total darkness.
 
Find something black for the blackground? Lol :D

Was done outside, but the idea's the same anyways. One (not very powerful) strobe (pointing away and reflected off an umbrella) to model's left - she's looking right. Reasonably high f number - f/11-ish and about 1/125sec exposure. That shuts out pretty much all the natural light.

I should add that it was taken early-ish evening in July - maybe about 8pm. So the light was starting to fade, but well before sunset and unless you're a tog you wouldn't notice how much (in summer) the light falls off after about 6-7 pm

Hope I will get the same results one day :)
 
Side light with a snoot/barn doors/gobo to stop anything spilling onto your background.
 
What I'd do:

430ex to the side of the subject on 1/16 or 1/32 power.

I'd then set the aperture to whatever, f/4 normally.
I'd then set the shutter speed as high as possible, so that it stays with in the shutter/flash sync (1/200). If it still wasn't fast enough, I'd put the power down on the flash.
 
Hi or like this, I have a great big window on the front of my house it's floor to ceiling that lets in masses of bright light on a sunny day, and let the subject stand there and shoot from the side, about F/11 1/125, i get half black and half in shot, the kids do it all the time, they play in front so cannot get a decent picture.. if i stop up and slow down the speed they go all fuzzy.
