Portrait help

Hi all, me, again. A friend has asked if I will be willing to go take some shots of her tonight ( who knows why) I've told her 'sure, i'll see what i can do'. Now, having never done anything like this before, any advice? Also, having a play with my 20D i noticed if i use the Portrait preset, I can only shoot JPEG, what if I want RAW? I assume I have to use manual but that could get messy :cuckoo:

no need to use manual to use RAW.

you can use aperture priority AV... and choose your aperture to how much depth of field you want and the camera will pick the right shutter speed for you.

will you be using flash?
 
Thanks for the reply Janice, I was hoping for a pro. Unfortuantely I haven't managed to aquire an off camera flash, yet. So it'll just be the camera flash. I understand it isn't ideal but it'll have to do. :'( I'll just try what you mentioned after I write this, again, many thanks.
 
Ha, no, the complete opposite. I don't post much round here as I never have anything useful to input, you , on the other hand always seem to know. So I'll be going with your advice.

Right, I'll be letting you know how badly it goes, maybe post a pic up if they aren't too bad.
 
As she is your friend you should have no problems getting her relaxed in front of the Camera, Try out a few different poses, sitting down, standing up, side on etc.

There are a few "general" rules with portraits, if your shooting quite close up so you have head and shoulders in the shot, focus on the eyes, if your going full body, focus on the chest.

Although i normally always focus on the eyes and im happy with the results i get, just try as many different shots as possible and dont be worried about telling her what you want her to do!

and the most important thing..

Have FUN!

:lol: A lot of people prefer available light for portraits so I'm sure you managed ok.
Positioning your model next to a window or using desk lamps/torches can give some really interesting effects - just watch your white balance under the different lighting types :thumbs:

I have never tried it with a camera though :nono: :D
