Portrait / glamour prime lenses for Nikon D90

Just taken this up and bought a 50mm F1.8 Nikkor lens for a hundred quid which seems very good.

I would like excellent results with my D90 and I'm confused as to why the F1.4 lenses from Nikon have such a disparity in price for 85mm over 50mm? The 85mm is £1200 and the 50mm is only £300 - how come?

For glamour / boudoir photography which is recommended - 50mm or 85mm?

It depends on how much room you have to work with. Obviously the 85mm is more restrictive, but if you have plenty of room to step back it's more ideal for portraiture than a 50mm. I've had both in 1.8 versions. I found the 85mm also great for street, it's practically a short tele prime. Tight indoors though.
 
its either in studio or hotel suite - but at first glance the lenses are very similar I can't understand why such a price difference?

I'm thinking of doing an A/B test to see the result for myself
 
the 85 has just been revised with the most recent technology. The 50 is an older and simpler. The 85 has a lot more glass in it, the 50 is small. The 85 is considered the premier portrait prime for full frame at the minute and can command that price. The 50 is a 'normal' lens (for focal length) and since it isn't 'specialized' then it can't command the same price premium.

I'd look for a 50 1.4 update in the next big release from Nikon, possibly to a 1.2 to compete with canon. Of course the price will go up.

I was going (with my D90) on a Portrait photpgraphy course today at Esher College but our 8 month was up all night, wife now unconscious for some reason so now I am going nowhere! When I am allowed to rebook I will answer the question for you!

In the meantime I would say 50mm, on the crop sensor it should be fine and is actually a 75mm lens.
