I have been using Elements 9 for a few months now, and I really like it. However, I have been using it on nature and landscapes, but wish to try it out on a couple of portraits.
The effect I am trying to achieve, is a nice flattering soft focus on the face (which I have largely achieved through a wide aperture), but wish to keep the eyes lovely and sharp.
I do not know how to edit part of an image, for example, select just the eyes for sharpening, and I wondered if any of you guys could help me out?

Cheers,

Andy

It's basically a case of using layer masks to hide or show only the parts you want to be affected.

Cheers Neil, so it is a case of isolating the part you wish to edit, then including it to overwrite the existing edited file (sounds a bit vague, but I have not used layers before).

I have just bought PSE9 and love this website for the beginner http://psd.tutsplus.com/ it is mainly for photoshop but still the tutorials are really useful for element users. Once on the website go to the sessions section then basix.

Say you wanted to increase the contrast of the iris, you could make duplicate layer then set the blend mode to soft light then add a layer mask filled with black, grab a brush and paint in white over the iris's. If the effect is too much just lower the opacity of the layer.
