portfolio????

depends what you want it of, buildings - human models -transport - food etc. Seems a silly answer but what if a car company wanted you to photograph a car and you turned up with a portfolio of women modelling clothes? or a jeweller wanting examples in you portfolio of wedding rings and you turn up with photos of different donoughts?
not as silly as first thought now
So if you give more information on what you intend to concentrate on then you may get some tips relative to your question

its for a photography degree so a wide range is needed i don't know how many images or how to create a folio

I would have thought then the best people to ask is the tutors

See post 3, it's for a photography degree.

sorry I missed that-

For the OP you need to produce a wide range of styles using only you very best work, and maybe one genre that you have a motivation to be involved in, like Landscapes or Portraits etc

there will be specs, such as sizes and printing formats surely?
also some in mono, some colour,
are there any examples or guidelines for you in the course work?
if it was me I would get some great prints done in A3 (ish) and present them in a quality folder.
the print space do a £5 sample of prints which would give you arguably the best opportunity to pic your printing style and media for the image that you want to present.
