i want to know what are some good tips on making a good portfolio. i dont even have an idea of what a portfolio look like. i would guess its just a collection of pictures right?

every single job that i try to apply asks for a portfolio.
please help me get the job!
thank you ;)

It's a collection of images that demonstrate you have the skills / experience to do the job better than any of the other applicants.

So it will change from job to job depending on what they're asking for. Also of course some may want prints, others digital files or a weblink, etc, etc.

Tips, be brutal in picking what you keep in and what you throw out.
Make it relevant, but still show a range of skills.

Plus more that I'm too tired to think of at the moment. :)

Also give it some thought on how you would like the images in your portfolio to look when you have them printed. It can make a world of difference to an image if you add an artistic border or a black edge, with white pin stripe for example.

Basically as James advises the whole point of a portfolio is to showcase your skills, editing and best work. It is worth investing a day selecting your best images and review them every couple of months. A great portfolio will bring you in work and a bad one will lose you some, about 20 images is a good starting point I would say. Your style will change over time and you will learn new techniques.

The important bit is that it's relevant to the job.. so different for every application, just like your CV and covering letter. Review your broader portfolio on a regular basis, but fine tune the final selection for each application.
