Yes
Was looking for something to do in my spare time so thought I would look into doing a college course.

I have been invited to interview on the 12 June.

They say they would like to also see a portfolio of some of my work.

Having never done a portfolio of my work before I am wondering how do I make one up, where would I be able to get one done/printed and how many images should I include?

Any tips or advice on the above would be much appreciated.

What's in it is more important than the physical item itself.

No more than 15 images.

What course it is may influence what you put in it. What level of course?

Hi David,

Thanks for your input, much appreciated.

It is an NC Photography course

I will be applying as a mature student so would like to make a good impression.

Take care,

Keith

The Nc dives into all types of photography, make sure it's various images of different subjects. So a few landscapes, portraits etc. Personal experience has shown me images no bigger than A4 :)

You can get A4 portfolio cases off eBay to carry your work in for a few quid!
That's where I got mine!

Choose a variety that shows flexibility and creativity. Also stuff that demonstrates that you have an interest in actually controlling the camera. At this level though, they're more interested in enthusiasm, so don't rely wholly on the portfolio... I'm assuming there will be an interview.. there is for most A&D courses, so demonstrate passion for the subject and demonstrate that you engage with photography by more than just taking pictures. Demonstrate what you are doing to learn more about it as a subject.

As for cheap folio cases... don't chose the ones with that horrible textures plastic for the sleeves. It makes viewing your images a pain in the ass.

Anything with clear plastic sleeves. You could even mount them on card (neatly) and have them loose in a portfolio box.

Thanks David, some great information there, much appreciated.

Yup I have an interview on the 12 June

What about getting my pictures printed direct in a portfolio type book?

It is just I would like to make a good impression.

Good idea or overkill?

If you have time, yeah... Blurb book, or Photobox. I think Photobox are faster.

So long as it looks like you've got some pride in your presentation, don't sweat it too much. A nice folio won't get you a place if the images are crap, and conversely, a cheap folio won't stop you getting a place if your images are good.

Decided I am going to get the prints done separately to give me more freedom on how I present them in my portfolio.

I have used DS Colour Labs for the prints based on recommendations on here.
