So I have seen the thread about the wedding portfolio building day.

I have recently been thinking about putting a website together but of course need a decent set of images for it, and seeing that thread got me thinking.

Would any others be interested in getting together for a day as a group to build some portfolio shots, portraiture, decent lighting etc?

Would have to look in to model costs and a location etc.

I am just gauging interest I suppose. Have never organised anything like this before so I am sure there might be more experienced input.

Anyway, let me know your thoughts

EDIT: Hugh (boyfalldown) has kindly offered to attend to help out and provide a bit of instruction to people on the day for no charge, thanks Hugh

In terms of location, I will wait and see who is interested and try and find somewhere that is convenient to as many people as possible. If anyone has any suggestions for location or what type of shots you want to achieve please post up

sound like a cracking idea, shame Im so far from you as I'd jump at a chance like this

good luck with it

Les ;)

I thought more people would have been in a similar position to me and want to get together a decent set of shots but this doesn't seem to have gone down to well?

I might just drop the idea as it won't be possible without enough people so if you are interested be sure to reply or drop me a PM to let me know

I'm trying to build a portfolio of portrait and wedding type shots. I may be up for it depending on where and when etc.

Could well be interested dependant on date and location

Am I reading this right?

You are going to set up shots using set up lighting and use them to market how good you are at doing weddings, without actually taking those shots AT A WEDDING?

If you sell a wedding on those pictures, without the stress of the timing, friends, family and small children under your feet I would think that amounted to fraud. Miselling at least.

That is completely immoral. You are going to be entrusted to providing wedding coverage on the strength of pictures taken under false conditions.

I am no longer a wedding photographer. I did relent last year and did one - and that confirmed it. I have turned down 3 already for this year. No more for me, I can do without the stress and hassle. BUT, for those that do weddings on a regular basis and make a damned good job I think this stinks.:bang:

No Simon you are reading it completely wrong; I suggest you read the original post again.

For what it's worth I agree with what you are saying but that is not what is going on here. Whether or not your comments would be valid in the thread I reference I don't know but this is nothing to do with wedding photography.

Really? If for portraits, that is one thing, but I saw something about wedding portfolios.....maybe I am getting two set ups confused. Set up portraits are feasible, the norm even, but to do this for a wedding portfolio is just downright wrong - and if I hired a photographer on the back of a set up day and he couldn't produce the same goods on the day of the wedding - he wouldn't get paid, or t least if he had already been paid he would be held to account, including legal action. It is selling under false pretences.

Yes, the very first line in my post says that I saw this thread:

http://www.talkphotography.co.uk/forums/showthread.php?t=395161

And that is what turned me on to the idea of arranging a meet up to build a portfolio for a website of portraits etc. I have not mentioned anything about putting together a wedding portfolio and it's not my intention to do that either. All I am looking for is to get together with some like minded people and split the costs on a studio/location and some models to get some decent shots.

Have you been making the same comments in the above thread because they are probably more relevant in there, in that that thread is about creating a wedding portfolio...

No Phil I haven't - I expect I am gettoing the two threads mixed up.

I apologse for confusing your set up wth the other one. My comments still hold good though on the morality of the wedding portfolio - it isn't,it is a model portfolio and anyone who goes to such lengths to try and prove how good they are at weddings should be ashamed of themselves. They will soon be found out on the day when the pictures taken on the fly don't match up to the portfolio - I foresee MORE complaints than already occur!

For portraits, I don't see any problem at all because a private client could go through the same motions if they wished.

When I posted to express my interest in this (see post #5) I said I was trying to build a portfolio of portrait & wedding shots.
Clearly this meeting would be to add to my portrait portfolio, and NOT my wedding one. (Although a couple of portraits of a model in a wedding dress would be good!) That's a different exercise, a way off yet, and I would hope to assist/2nd shoot on a number of weddings to add to my wedding sets, and for the experience !
Maybe my original comment added to the confusion !! If so, apologies.
FWIW I partly agree with "falsifying" wedding shots. I think the switch from set up shots to a real wedding situation would be a bit of a shock.
Although everyone has to start somewhere, and models are a good place to start honing technique etc.

Interested depending on date and location

nothing wrong with doing Wedding or Ports as a portfolio builder.

It's a chance to practice and get some images using off cam flash or something else a tog would like to try out. Use of reflectors etc....

you would not try out new ideas on a new bride? and when you mention it what do have to show the brides to be??????

Nothing false as it is the togs own work.............. Never heard such tosh! How do expect togs to try out new ideas and techniques?????

Totally agree with you. If you are doing your 1st,2nd or 3rd wedding, how can you show your clients what you are capable of unless you can show sample shots which you have take yourself.
:):):)

That is the problem I think. It is a catch22 situation. I know the very first time I tried shooting a (model) bride in a bright white dress in the sunshine I messed up more than I thought I would.
So in that context it is an absolute necessity to "practice" on a paid model to get the technique right.
How else could you do it?

Hi Phil.
I personally am more interested in doing some nice outdoor location work, rather than studio work.
I don't know what sort of area you are looking at, so cannot offer any suggestions as to locations.
I am willing to travel to a good location though. (Plus if any-one needs a lift from Essex/Romford area I will offer a lift.
Cheers,
Gary

Just one word of caution regarding the outdoor option:
I was recently involved with a shoot on Hampstead Heath. It was on a sunday, and we had 4 models and around 12 togs attending. After only 30 minutes, the park police arrived and informed us we needed a permit to shoot there. The organiser hadn't arranged one, so it was a difficult situation. This just to say check the local by-laws with regard to photography, just in case. In the case of Hampstead Heath, permits are granted, but it has to be arranged, in writing with plenty of notice.

Thanks guys, will investigate all this tonight. There is a fair number of people now interested so perhaps I would look in to organising 2 days, 1 for studio and 1 for outside? In terms of location I am open to any ideas so long as they aren't hundreds of miles away.

I might add a poll or something to see what peoples thoughts are.

Regarding shooting locations, thanks for the information. I will make sure any permits required are granted before confirming a location.

EDIT: Poll added for all those interested.

Just to let everyone know I do still intend to get this organised but work has been so crazy I just have no time at the moment. I will update the thread shortly with the latest people.

HopefulM (Maria) has also kindly PM'd me to let me know she has access to a decent venue.

I am looking forward to it. Just let me know where and when.
