I got a porfolio binder thing for another portfolio i've just finished (a 3D one for my course).

Went to Paperchase in Manchester and got a fairly nice material covered one. Has hard pages with those glossy celephane coatings (basically a photo album). Cost just under £20. Here's some images:

Now, I want to do something similar for my photo portfolio but I was planning to spend alot more money on it. I was thinking of going for a really nice leather one from PureDesign (also sold on silverprint.co.uk) for about £100. The only thing that kinda puts me off them is that the pages arn't hard like a photo album, they are just like pages in a book (but they are glossy and a bit nicer than just standard pages).

Basically I want one that has a really nice real leather cover which is thick & strong but I also want those hard pages that you get in a photo album as they look nicer and more professional. Plus you can see the content behind them better as they are basically stuck to the image/page.

What do you guys think? Do you reckon the one from Paperchase is professional-looking enough? (I personally don't but if it had a nice leather cover it would be alot nicer).

Also does anyone know of any porfolio binders that have leather cover and hard pages inside?
 
I would be very careful of the ones from paperchase as some of them have inserts that will eat your prints.

If you are serious about your folio, have a look here. Cowling and Wilcox (the people that run the website I liked to), have three stores around London you can go and look at samples of the folios in store. All the best (and IMHO more professional looking) folios are screw post. Cowling and Wilcox can also have your name (company name) embossed onto the cover of your folio.

Oh and the Cowling and Wilcox have some of the same folios you can get in Paperchase but for less money.
 
Yeah they are quite nice, shame that they just use that rather cheap looking plastic stuff for the internal sleves...

if you have a mac you can get a book made, you arange the photos/text you want and send it off and they deliver the book you have designed check here:

the prices are in dollars but i know you it is available here, my lecturer is trying it out to see how good quality it is.
 
Yeah seen them before, loads of companies do that.

I want to be able to change the images (add new ones, replace them etc as my portfolio grows) so they arn't really suitable.

I am not sure if you have ever seen these folios in person, but they may be a plastic sleeve, but they don't look cheap.

I am also confused on what you want. You want to have a family album looking folio?

Just about everyone I know has their main folio from Cowling and Wilcox. The most standout ones are the ones with the acrylic covers.

You should also realise, that two A3 prints with the back backing paper in the middle in one folio sleeve is very thick already. A 20 photo folio (10 pages) already weighs close to 10kg. I am not sure a book with hard set pages would weigh.

From the look of the silverpirnt site, their folios use the same pages as the ones from Cowling and Wilcox.

But then I don't work for any of these companies, and you will probably buy 3-4 folios before you find one you really like, so have fun!!!
 
Hmmmm ok.

Yeah probably will end up going for one from silverprint or one from PureDesign directly. Seem nicely made, handmade leather and all looks pretty nice.
 
Just double check what the inserts are made from before you buy. I have had folios from Paperchase that were supposed to be archival degrade my prints after only 1 year.

I do my own printing, so it was not as big an issue as it could have been, but if I was to reprint my fine art folio (which has more then 50 A3 prints in it) It would cost me more then £200 and take more then two full days, so now I am very carefull.
 
Yeah I don't think i'l get one from Paperchase, i'd rather spend more and get a proper hand-made leather one from Silverprint/PureDesign.
