Hi all,

Does anyone have any recommendations for portable storage which I can plug my sd cards into and download the files?

I don't have a laptop, so that isn't an option.

Off to new Zealand soon which means I will take loooooads of photos, other option is just to buy lots of memory cards.

Thanks

Ian

I use this and copy onto a high capacity USB drive, but I use this as backup and take multiple SD cards too as I'm paranoid about losing the images if I only have one copy ;) You can use a portable hard drive too if you think you're going to need huge capacity. Very straightforward to use and is controlled by an app on a smartphone or tablet.

Greater that looks like what I am after as I do have a external hard drive, but my hard drive needs to be powered by something I think?

Lots of memory cards, or upgrade your current cards for fewer, larger cards. If you're talking about a separate storage media to increase your capacity you're implying formatting the cards for re-use during the trip.

I never format a memory card until the contents are safely transferred to at least two separate long-term storage mediums (in practice four - pc, server, server mirror drive and cloud). Accidental loss is the biggest concern with memory cards, and they're substantially easier to secure than a larger drive unit when on the road.

With improved reliability and decreasing cost of memory cards I've moved away from a pocketful of 4Gb CF cards which I carried around with me ten years ago to 64Gb SD cards that can live in the camera for the duration of most holidays I take and minimising the changing of cards, the changeover being the point when the card is most vulnerable to being dropped, getting lost, etc.

You can get a 64gb or 128gb USB flash drive pretty cheap now, save some space as well.

Yeah, I'm with Alastair. Even if I were to make a backup during a trip, I wouldn't format the card until it's on my home PC and external drive.

TBH I'm not sure if the verbatim device would power the hard drive or not, I'll try it out later. It does come with a USB cable that plugs into the mains so maybe you need it plugged in to power a hard drive.
