All the existing threads on these devices seem to be fairly old so I shall ask the question again.

Has anyone bought one recently? Any recommendations for good 'uns or 'uns to avoid?

Thanks!

I bought a Jobo GigaOne 40gb to use on holiday but found I only used it to back up the pics I had taken & never ran out of room on my CF cards - It does what it says on the tin transferring files from card to the Jobo quite quickly but I sold it on as I didn't feel I would get the level of use from it to justify keeping it - HTH ... Paul ;)

I also have the GigaOne. Stays in my kit bag and use it mainly at weddings where CF cards are backed up straight away. Solid construction (I was surprised at how heavy it was when I got it), basic and does what it says. Easy to use. £100 well spent for peace of mind. Also know that I will never run out of CF cards now!

The Seagate USB / SATA Drives are normally pretty good.

250GB Start from £40.00

to

750GB for £140.00

But then you need to carry you pc or laptop with you, i think the OP is refer to something you can put in your pocket.

Personal i do take my laptop with me and transfer them to that, means i can play and check i am useing the right setting sfor my desired effect, i am also away alot for 2-3 days at a time, and use a round 60gig.

Yes, I am. I'm heading off for a fortnight in France in a couple of weeks and want to be sure I have enough storage. In a fortnight in Sri Lanka I used about 6gb in cards, but photography-time on that trip was limited and I was shooting jpg. Now I'm shooting raw and photography will be a much bigger part of this trip. And at some point in the not too distant future I want to migrate from 6mp to to 10mp.

How much storage am I going to be using in future? No idea - that's the problem.

Thanks to you and PaulBoy. I had been looking at the GigaOne and wondering about it. That looks like the way to go.

I think the Gigaone is the most popular one i have seen being used around, i was thinking about one before the laptop, but for me the laptop is ideal, but i think id prefer a gigaone if up mountains or traveling light.

I've got an epson p5000 - its an excellent piece of kit. It reads CF cards directly, can store files of any description. It can display images (jpg or raw) video and play mp3s. The screen is excellent. It can also back up to (or from) a usb drive for added security. There's also a p3000 which has a smaller HDD and is, consequently a bit cheaper
