portable lighting

Looks ok on paper, I would imagine the battery is an SLA (Sealed Lead Acid) so it will be... 1. heavy 2. if you drop it and it splits it will be like a car battery lots of acid... 3. if you let it go completely flat the battery is knackered.

For a little more you could get the 2x600 head Lencarta Safari, but of course with 2 heads this system splits the power 50/50, but it is Bowens S fit compatible..

All in all though it does look an attractive package..

Any battery system other than Lithium, is going to be heavy, and no it doesn't matter at all if you completely drain the battery. :)

will look at the lencarta safari and see how it goes...back soonLOL

This is the kit I've recently purchased, recycle time on full power for two lights @ 8secs does seem about right although I've not timed it but then recycle time of that duration doesn't bother me, there is a fast option on the pack but I've not used that (not needed to, perfectly happy waiting 8secs!)

It's got a rubber casing around the edges so if it drops then damage is reduced but obviously not having dropped it I can't vouch for wether it'll leak or not but it is solid and yes it's Sealed Lead

well what about a standard studio kit (no batteries, just mains) ...suggestions please....up to £1k to spend

Why not buy a battery pack kit and add accessories.. Best of both worlds then...

Though..

I have a couple of friends, one has the safari for location work and the other has the Lencarta Elite pro 300 win head kit in their studio/shop.... I can't advise on other brands as I am new to flash lighting too..
I was going to go for a starter 200 W/s kit, but as I don't have a studio space portable is the way forward for me..

Elinchrom might fit the bill too...

I got the Bowens 500/500 Travel pack kit a few weeks back, used it for the first time in anger on a location shoot last weekend, it worked fine, recycle was a tad slow, but workable, there was another tog usiong the Safari kit, and for me the fact that the power is controled on the pack so both lights have to run the same was an inconveniance, and with the bowens being battery and mains, meant I could use them inside and out with ease.

elemental / lencarta if you're going for mains powered heads, you can add a tronix battery pack at a later date.

I'm really liking the look of the safari though, the ranger looks waaay nice but would mean changing my whole system as I'm 100% s fit atm :/

For that money get the Bowens, and then you can just add the Travelpak as necessary. Good quality English built, and will hold better resale value should you change your mind. There are other cheaper makes, but in my experience they're cheap for a reason. If more money was available I'd say get Elinchrom, expensive but cheaper than some, and their light modifiers are simply the best, end of. :)

you can play with mine :D

+1 for elemental, until I stumbled across a bargain that was my plan

Check out my for sale thread :)
Have a 3 head studio kit for sale. Look in my signature for the link :)

dave hobby (strobist) also found some pretty horrendous flash durations from a pack that looked suspiciously like that viewfinder one... even down to T1 = 1/60th at full power :(
