Going on a trip soon and want to be able to backup/copy to tablet/lightly edit stills and video.

I have media on SD cards will this allow me to copy that media onto a USB hard drive and then make the data on the hard drive available to my tablet so I can edit pics/short bits of video? Is there anything similar from a more well known make? It's only for fun so I don't need bullet proof reliability but I'll be miffed if an unknown brand corrupts my HD and spoils my editing.
