As the studio I used to hire closed, I am looking for alternatives. I have decided that in the interim I am going to hire village halls and shoot in them. Cheap, spacious and no need to worry about paying a rent every month.

I am looking at a portable background solution. I have come across the Bessel system and a grey/white vinyl background.

Anyone have any experience or recommend anything better? I am not looking to spend huge amounts, but want something sturdy and good quality.

I have seen the Manfrotto, but is it really worth the extra?

I've not used the Bessel kit but it looks somewhere between the generic Chinese stuff and middle tier (someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). £30 more should get you the Interfit heavy duty kit which seemed to me only second to the Calumet heavy duty kit. It's also worth keeping your eye out for second hand gear, plenty of great pieces get practically thrown out especially if it's the wrong brand.

The only alternative I can think of would be to get some hooks to mount onto light stands then you could use Expan rollers but I'm not sure that would bring you any real advantage.
