I know there have been a few threads recently about this and whilst I have a similar question as many, it is slightly different :)

It is looking like I may need some form of portable backdrop. I've looked at the pop up ones such as hilites and don't really fancy that tbh, seems far too much of a faff and I'm not really after the hi white look. I do like the idea of the 2mx1.5m massive fold up reflector things like this https://www.amazon.co.uk/Life-Photo...2537&sr=8-4&keywords=life+of+photo+background

But I would really like a few different colours, especially the mottled colours.

Would this mean getting the backdrops, some stands and a crossbar type setup? If so any recommendations. Needs to be decent quality.

Thanks.

Sorry Paul, cannot help with the question but will be watching the thread as I am on the lookout for a backdrop as well.

Thanks

Edit:

I have used a IKEA blackout blind with a background stand that has worked well, but not big enough for a group/full size photos.

Once you've got the basic pop-up frame a few slip covers can give you a range of backdrops colours/effects.

You could use those with a single light stand, and a light stand clamp.
Something like this....https://www.cameraking.co.uk/phot-r-heavy-duty-metal-studio-clamp-with-light-stand-attachment/
Ive just ordered one to hold a foam board reflector, but may get a collapsible background in the future.
Useful looking clamp, thanks :)

What a good idea ... thanks Alastair.

.. and don't overlook the possibilities of Tinker Tubes.

I just bought a 10ft wide 7ft high background support stand set - two stands one cross-member (comes in its own bag too, which is nice) to do these with for about £40 I think it was

I have a huge 'curtain' that slides onto the top-bar and then just add the coloured frilly bits with small clamps - I think its bloody naff as Hell but some clients like/request it :)

I had to google those to find out what they are :)
and to think I've been calling that push-fit waste pipe all these years :P
http://www.diy.com/departments/floplast-waste-pipe-dia32mm-l3m-pack-of-10/35016_BQ.prd you can get 45 degree angle connectors, 90 degree connectors, T-connectors etc. Use a bit of plastic cement on the joints you are not going to separate again. I cover mine with Translum plastic sheet.

I've made 2 scrim frames from this stuff so far. Here's Joe to tell you all about it

For a simple portable background, just buy rolls of background paper. As long as you have a wall and some gaffer tape, you don't need to carry stands about. Just put the roll on the floor, and pull it up the wall and tape it (so the roll is at the bottom). Use gaffer tape or masking tape if you want the paint to stay on the wall when you pull the tape off :-/

To hold a steel rimmed collapsible background, if that's the road you go down, check out the magnetic background support bracket from Lastolite. Fits directly into a light stand ... can't remember how much weight it takes but I can get it to hold a small hilite, and a 6x9 bg.
