Thinking about next year's family holiday. I'm not looking for a photographic adventure just the usual package holiday for the family with apartment with plenty to do for the kids in a popular resort but would be nice to be somewhere I could take a walk and get some interesting shots. I'm not one for sunbathing all day.

My first thought was Greece. What's Crete like?

Any ideas?

Sardinia? Cheap as chips once you get away from the Costa Smeralda on the NE coast. Loads of photo opportunities and some fantastic beaches. Can be a little remote though. Pick a location fairly wisely

cretes good ,avoid malia in season though due to its teen takeover ,there are plenty of sights to visit if your into history ,the beaches are nice to and the greeks tend to like the brits above other nations . you could actually though say the same for most of the other greek islands ,kos, rhodes, zante, santorini take your pick .
we are off to zante ourselves in a couple of weeks for a much needed break

Crete is lovely. I like the Rethmnynon area. Plenty to see and do. I would recommend a villa with pool and hire car. Some great villages up in the mountains as well. Even my children love all the history.

But then again no idea what your photographic interests are. I got on holiday to relax and spend time with my family, but your mileage may vary.

More for kids around Heraklion (Crete) than the other centres but Heraklion city itself is less photogenic than Rethymnon or Chania. Knossos isn't too far away and deserves a visit or 2, as does the palace at Malia (approach from the East rather than going through the stream of vomit from Brits on the p*** - or rent a BIG 4x4 and mow them down...) Nice beaches between Heraklion and Malia as well as some relatively quiet villages (compared to Malia and Hersonissos, although Old Hersonissos [a few km inland] is nice.) The Lassithi Plateau is well worth the journey too, especially on a hot day - the Dictean Cave [where Zeus was raised according to ancient myth] is lovely and cool, although flash is banned. (Take a clamp type support and get some long exposures of the lit formations.)

I don't really want to hire a car. I would like to just take some walks with interesting buildings Interesting people, markets, fisherman, shadows, textures etc.. Not so keen on landscape really nowadays.

Public transport on Crete is quite good but does tie you too being fairly close to their routes - it's too bloody hot to walk very far! Most package companies will run tours/excursions to the more popular sites but the costs will add up PDQ if you go down that route - it might actually be cheaper to rent a car for a few days.

I think Rethymnon would be a good resort. Fairly long coast line, nice old town part, nice harbours, lots of light to play with, it can be busy and it can be quiet. I haven't been to Chania but it is on my list. I'm not keen on the east coast resorts at all, gets a bit too lifely and tacky for my liking (I'm sure there are exceptions in some villages).
