Poppy For Remembrance Day

Thank you for the poppy and thanks you the idea Keith. Hope you dont mind, I have used your poppy and added a picture of my grandfather, John Kenealy, who was killed on 16th July 1916 at the battle of the Somme, he was 34. As was said earlier, as you get older, the significance of Armistice Day seems more poignant.

His picture was taken around 1914 I guess so not great quality.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

People in England at least should be more aware this year as I (and presume everyone else) have had a special pack in the letter box about 4 11s

11th hour, 11th day, 11th month, 2011

By way of a bump
I'm in :)

Bumping this for remembrance day 2012

If our old soldiers could see what they had given their life for they would be ashamed of this country and what it's turned into. God bless everyone of them. It's important we make sure our children are never allowed to forget either.

"O Almighty God the Creator and Sustainer of all mankind,
uphold we pray thee men and women who through perils of war are serving our nation,
Be thou their strength when they are set in the midst of so many and great dangers,
and keep them steadfast until they come to thy everlasting kingdom,
through Jesus Christ our Lord
Amen"

Just on a similar line and one that many people don't realise you can get is a Purple Poppy.

The Purple Poppy was brought out to remember all the fallen animals used over the years and still being used today - some of our boys couldn't be without the sniffer dogs etc.

If anyone is interested in getting one you can find them on the animal aid website

Can post the link if people are interested.

Bump.

I'm in

I support the idea of remembering the fallen animals of war too but not a penny of my money would go to supporting that organisation :shake:

They are not an official organisation and has nothing to do with the official poppy appeal that is organised by the RBL

Incidentally any animals used by the forces are considered "one of the boys" anyway and the red poppy is just as much for them as it is for there human comrades.

This!!

yup have seen a few about, mainly in the big supermarkets though

Its not November yet so another 12 days to go. Why would they need to be out so early. I 'buy' mine a couple of days at most before the actual sunday remembrance.
I would have though a week in advance to start selling would be plenty.
Mind you maybe the RBL have found over the years that they receive more donations by having them available a bit longer, in which case fair enough.

Many thanks for that. Delighted to display a poppy.

I never really liked the idea of the poppies when it was called the Haig appeal for reasons which verge on the political. Now they've dropped that, I'm far happier dropping my donation in the tins. Never been a great one for feeling the need to display my support for any organisation with a large, gaudy thing though, so I was very pleased earlier today to find a stall which had the small pin badges rather than the paper poppies. Far happier with that on a lapel than a big red fake flower stuffed through the knit of a jumper!

Done and recently found some info on my uncle who was killed in WW1
A Special Remembrance Weekend for me

Great to see you've kept bumping this post through the years Keith.
Thank you
