Anyone got any experience shooting Polo?

I got a call this afternoon from the local paper to cover a polo event tomorrow afternoon - I didn't even know we had a local team :eek: Turns out it's the 2nd oldest in the country and the event tomorrow is actually a big deal.

Most of the coverage is for the social side so that's no problem and the sponser is Aston Martin which will be nice but I've also been asked to get some shots of the action on the field and I've no idea beyond generic horses dashing around type stuff. I've had a read up on the rules and a look in Wiki but any tips/pointers/advice would be most welcome.

Can't help at all. I believe all the players are called either Tarquin or Rodney.

Polo is one equestrian area I haven't covered yet but would like to. It is fast and furious at times and you should be guaranteed some good action shots but you will need a longish lens as the playing field is huge. Most polo players use numerous horses, one for each chukka (I think that is what it is called) so you should be able to get some good shots of pumped, sweaty beasts at each break in play.

As an aside, I was talking to one of the staff at Digital Depot a few months ago and he was telling me about one of their customers who recently retired. A keen amateur he covered a polo match and sent the pics off to a polo mag, he now covers a lot of events worldwide for the magazine with all travelling expenses paid and they provide him with kit!

Good luck with it, look forward to seeing the images.
