Trying to work out what length of pvc pipe would be needed for a poly tunnel if it was to cover over a box. So the box would be made 1.2m wide by 0.8m long by 1.2m high, would need a bit of space around the box to allow for air movement so the tunnel cannot touch the edges of the box. So far I think I have 1.5m high (to allow for air movement) x 3.14 = 4.71m length of pipe needed to make the hoop does this seem right? I cannot work out if this needs to be divided by 2 or not as it in effect half a circle. As you can tell maths was not a strong point at school.

Thanks Neil that is good to know.

But that'll only give half a circle, fine if you're connecting to something at ground level, but if you're sticking into the ground, you'll need to add the legs.

Thanks Phil, yes that is something I need to consider.

You will also need to add on half the diameter of whatever you are using for the hoops into the equation or you will not finish up with 1.5mtr clear.;)

Good point Neil, I had not thought of that.

If the cross section of the box is 1.2m x 1.2m, the radius of the hoop needs to be 1.341641m (inside diameter of the hoop) to just touch the top corners. That only leaves about a 6" gap (yeah, I know I'm mixing units - sue me!!!) for air movement, not allowing for sagging of the plastic sheeting used to cover the hoops.

Personally, I'd stick the hoops on top of the box rather than astride and use the 1.2m width of the box as the diameter of the hoops. That would need 3.77m for 2 supporting hoops plus however much you want to bury or attach to the sides of the box to support the hoops and cover.

Thanks Nod, that would help keep the profile down.
