Yes
I live at the bottom of a dead end street and we can also here the ambulance and police sirens on the near by dual carriage way. Friday morning I did not take any notice of the sirens on the dual carriage way. Very shortly afterwards the sirens appeared to be coming from the front of the bungalow, so went out to investigate. It appears that the police car was chasing a couple of youngsters in a car from Derby which is around 8 miles away. They had turned down our street and in turning had crashed into 2 cars parked at the top of street. As the street is a dead end the youths had come to a stop with the bags inflated, they had stopped about 2 feet from our front window with a police patrol car immediately behind them, one tried to get away by running down the drive further up the street.
Minutes after the cars stopped no fewer than 5 police cars arrived all behind each other, so we then had a virtual army of police uniforms outside, 10 in all, not long after this there appeared 6 (I think) plain close officers walking down the street. A neighbour made tea and there they all stood drinking tea.
I ask you 16 police and 5 vehicles all in a line on the street. No wonder you cannot get a policeman if you wanted one.

So, the police pursued, apprehended, and I'm assuming arrested the car occupants.
Any idea why they were originally being pursued?
Perhaps they had committed a crime so grievous as to warrant such a response.
Do you know?

Mainly lots of officers to seal the area in case of a decamp, especially if the helicopter isn't available.
Usually the scroates are a mini crime wave so putting suitable resources in actually stops that crime wave and a saving in police resources overall.

As above.
Also, the police don't know what they have to deal with until they have finished dealing with it. If these individuals had offered violence the police would have wanted to outnumber them massively, to avoid danger to themselves.
One of my sons is an officer in a young offender's institution, highly trained officers dealing with 15 - 18 year olds, but except in an emergency, they work on a basis of 3 of them to one offender when restraint is needed, to avoid unnecessary injury both to themselves and to the prisoners.

If the OP had wanted a policeman he'd have been spoiled for choice, no idea what he's moaning about :)

And if they'd driven into your car/wall whatever with no police in attendance?
Nothing wrong in supplying a good cup of tea to any of the emergency services or indeed anyone at all.

Thanks for all your replies (& sarcastic remarks) I still think that number of police was well over the top.

I suspect most were incredulous rather than sarcastic.
How can you possibly know if the response was disproportionate if you have no idea about the incident in its entirety.

I'm assuming though, since you're so dissatisfied with the police on this occasion, that you've taken it up with them by way of a formal complaint?

Formal complaint is the way forward then the police can spend hours investigating the complaint rather than dealing with criminals.

A kind offer of tea and spending time with the person that made it, whilst having a high profile presence is excellent police work

So what actually happened leading up to this ending? Upon what experience do you base that this number was well over the top?

When I was burgled I was very pleased that within six minutes I had four vehicles and six officers present. Was that also over the top?

I guess it depends what side of the fence you are sitting on ;)
Sorry you were burgled, but I would assume that 1 car 2 officers to do the initial investigation / statement taking and then call for SOCO etc if there is enough evidence to warrant it.

But of course if its "you" that's being burgled you would also expect the Sweeney and the full NCIS team to be there in seconds ;)

It was a burglary in progress. A crime in action, as such even if it wasn't "me" I expect everyone to get the same kind of response.

Similarly to the OP where it was a crime in action, and we don't even know what crime it was. Or who it was that was involved, this no informed decision can be made.

PS. It would have been even better if Keeley Hawes showed up, forget about the Sweeney.

It was a general "you" but yes I agree with the sentiment!

And I'd have been loading the 12 bore semi auto too ;)

I gather that is a joke?
Surely a woman wouldn't be trusted with a serious crime??? Maybe if there was a number of police she could make the tea or jot down some notes?

You obviously have no idea who Keeley is. Stop asking daft questions dude :p :) who care about the crime, tea or notes. She is a top copper.

But a better actress. ;)

Meh, But in some photo's she looks a little like Carol Vorderman,
now there is a real woman ;)

Nah, she's gone all fake and blonde (as seen on the One show earlier this evening.)

Interesting fact:
I had her old room at university.

Ok, not that interesting.

Up to about five years ago I was with you on that one.

I just googled a recent picture, ( Second one down) and don't like the blond look at all :(
I have to say she now looks like Tina turner, who has had so many face lifts, that she now has a beard ;)

Thank god for an ergonomic keyboard, that cup of tea whent straight through it :)

I'm guessing she had long since moved out?
Yes, thankfully. Would have made 'entertaining the ladies' a bit awkward if she was still kicking around.
Some of the college porters had been there for years and remembered her. I won't divulge their stories!

I wouldn't normally be disparaging about someone's looks (glass houses etc) but there's a poster of her in the Lidl window and I shuddered at the amount of work she's had done.
It's such a shame women in showbiz (and men to a much lesser, although growing extent) feel the need to go under the knife to stay 'relevant'.

I agree when we are told the police lack resources to deal with every crime reported.

Reminds me of when I worked at a certain shop. We had closed and were in the process of locking all valuables in a safe designed that once time locked could only be overridden by a specialist team from head office, this woman turns up and demands we serve her. She starts banging on the door, so we call the police. Five squad cars and 10 policemen/women turn up.

For some reason my brain inserted the words "In her" between the words her & old
Wishful thinking, we all do it from time to time :D

That's a specific situation. The OP has NO idea what the details of the incident in question were
The occupants of the car could have been armed.
They could have carried out a murder.
That is the point....knowledge versus a bit of a grumble.

It's clear that some people can't grasp the fairly simple concept that some calls will get more attention than others based on how the initial report is perceived.

Cops will drop everything to go to a call where its perceived life could be in danger or there's an ongoing high value theft or whatever. This means that in all likelihood cops will be in the middle of dealing with an overwhelming list of jobs and will have to abandon those to deal with something like the call above. Nobody has a clue what they're going to until they get there. If the owner of the shop called in saying something like 'hi, we're a high value establishment and somebody is going berserk in the shop' then of course it gets a rapid response to all units. Every unit will make their way there until the facts have been established and the proportionality has been judged.

Sounds like people should be grateful not critical!!!

True in the case of the OP but to repeat five squad cars and a total of ten officers to advise one woman that we are now closed and cannot reopen to serve her because of security devices does seem rather OTT. We all thought so.Because we were on a one way system, the road was now blocked by squad cars
Bet she felt a right plonker as squad car after squad car turned up.
