Police dogs die in parked vehicle

The dogs died at the police headquarters at Sherwood Lodge
Two police dogs have died in a hot vehicle parked outside the headquarters of Nottinghamshire Police.

An RSPCA officer was called to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters in Arnold on Tuesday and found two German shepherd dogs dead.

An independent vet is carrying out post-mortem tests to establish how the animals died.

The incident has been voluntarily referred to the Independent Police Complaints Commission (IPCC).

'Swiftly reported'

Nottinghamshire's Assistant Chief Constable, Peter Davies, said: "This is a tragic incident and we value the important work our police dogs carry out on a daily basis.

"That is why we swiftly reported this incident to the RSPCA and we will be working with them very closely."

In a statement Nottinghamshire Police said the welfare of all of its animals was "of paramount importance and we endeavour to take every measure possible to ensure their well-being and safety".

The force refused to say what kind of vehicle was involved.

Nottinghamshire vet Andrew Wilson said: "Dehydration would have been a big factor.

We are investigating and they are co-operating with us

RSPCA spokesman
"They wouldn't be able to cool themselves because panting wouldn't be effective anymore, there would be no evaporation from the tongue.

"As the core temperature rose as a result of that, and the brain temperature rose, the brain would cease to function and various other organs would fail. This happens certainly within 30 minutes."

A spokesman for the IPCC said the "matter had been referred to them on Tuesday afternoon and they were considering it".

An RSPCA spokesman said: "It was reported to us yesterday by Nottinghamshire Police.

"We are investigating and they are co-operating with us.

"I am sure this isn't the first incident and it won't be the last."

Safety measures

Chairman of the Nottinghamshire Police Authority, John Clarke, said: "This is a truly tragic incident. I am deeply disturbed to learn of the deaths of these police dogs, which play such a vital role in the fight against crime.

"The RSPCA has been informed and will, I am sure, carry out a thorough and speedy investigation.

"The authority has asked to be provided at the appropriate time with a full report into the circumstances.

"In the meantime we are requiring a guarantee from the force that measures are being put in place immediately to ensure that an incident like this can never happen again."

The Dogs Trust, the UK's largest dog welfare charity, said it was "saddened" by the news.

In June last year Nottinghamshire Police made a public appeal for German Shepherd dogs to be donated to increase the number of working dogs in the force.

Training a police dog to the standard where it can go out with an officer on patrol costs an estimated £7,000 and involves a nine-week intensive course.

The maximum sentence for causing unnecessary suffering to an animal is six months in prison and a £20,000 fine

This really upsets me. I love dogs so much. The person responsible for keeping them in the car, and thus causing their death, should be banned from handling dogs.

:(

When I first heard it on the news this morning, all it said was, 'two police dogs died outside Force hq, the IPCC investigating'. That's all.

Whilst I was driving to work, I thought, maybe the dogs were left in one of the vehicles with the air con on, (engine running) keys out and the vehicle locked and maybe the air con malfunctioned.

However, if the reporting in my initial post is to be believed, then whoever is responsible for this should be sacked and prosecuted and so should certain high ranking officers.

Can hardly believe that any dog handler could be so incompetent/irresponsible/stupid or whatever to do that.

This is terrible. They should be banned from working with animals again, and sacked for being so stupid!

This really upsets me as I too am great dog lover, and needless death of any kind by ANYONE needs to be punished severley, but they will probably get away with it. Yet if I or any of you did this, the book would be thrown at us. Sickens me

From Sky News:-

Police said no-one has been suspended over the incident.

It is believed the dogs' handler was not on duty at the time and had called in to the Sherwood Lodge headquarters, leaving the dogs in the parked car.

if they dont get prosecuted for this i'm going to be fuming. a civilian would have been prosecuted straight away

.

That says it for me too, thank you.

AFAIK police dog handlers keep their dogs at home and work together in the same way as any working dog and handler. I can't imagine the handler feels anything other than saddenned, sickened, shamed and very, very sorry.

The handler will be suicidal, the dogs are friends / colleagues / children to them.

We all make mistakes in life, this is one of the **** ones :'(

Very sad....especially since I have 2 GSDs. Would never leave them alone in the car, especially in this heat!

no excuse for neglect! makes my blood boil, everyone will be losing faith in the police again

They certainly will if nobody is prosecuted or disciplined for this.

It may have been a lapse of judgement, but that doesn't wash if it is a member of the public, it shouldn't for the Police.

I just want to see equal treatment for all, including those who make the law and those who enforce it.

Something most Police officers want as well.
