There is a shed load of activity next door in recent weeks and more so in last few days, is there anyway I can find out what? Its kinda concerning we had over dozen police officers go into the house next door (really quiet neighbourhood too, very out of character for the area) and vans cars coming and going all day yesterday... am I obliged/allowed to ask police what's going on or are they likely to respond with the saying none of my business and its a police matter?

Depends what they are doing....

Nothing there to stop you asking, there's no obligation on you to, just as there may not be any on them to tell you.

Best way is to to find some other pressing reason to speak to them, cars parked badly in the street blah blah, then "Oh I am curious, there's a lot of you going in and out of next door......."

I'd ask and see if there is any information you might know that would help them.

Ask a polite, direct question. You might get a limited response, they are not at all obliged to tell you anything and don't start getting uppity if they won't (I'm not suggesting you will), it won't help.

When you consider they often rely on the public to volunarily give them information when they don't legally have to, it's just the same thing in reverse.

The difference is that its your public duty to assist Police. But, Police officers, if investigating something may well be under obligations not to share that information. I'm afraid it's not a one way street in terms of duties and responsibilities.

Surely they are our servants as we pay their wages

My father used to declare tha all police, politicians, etc were our servants and not our masters.

Steve.

I'm sure they'll tell you when they can.

Reminds me of the first morning in our flat in eastleigh, was a knock on the door about 9am when an officer in the whole rapid entry gear handed us a letter explaining they'd just carried out a drug raid in an adjoining block

Well just after posting this the lady from next door knocked on the door and said that they had had some dodgy guy from London bashing their door so asked us to report any suspicious noise or activity to the police, later this eve lots of noise called police on 101 and outright asked them... Can't tell me

First thing that strikes me is that they don't consider that you have any information to give them or else they would have interviewed you about anything unusual you might have seen.

Second thing is that putting the kettle on and offering them (or the outside ones) a cuppa might get quite a bit of info. :jaffa:

A dodgy guy from London and over a dozen of police officers and cars/vans etc....Nah, we are bad but not that bad...I bet she is telling you a fib and she is the subject of the investigation ;)

Three weeks ago an old woman a few doors from me was having a fair amount of police activity. I asked one of the officers if anything was going on that could be of concern to the community. He was happy to explain that nothing had actually happened, but there may have been prowlers. He asked if I would ring 101 if I noticed anything suspicious, which I am happy to do.
Do no harm to make a friendly approach and ask the police if you are concerned.

Local press may have something about a police operation.

So many things it could be......

I think she is the brain behind the latest internet hit.

Watchmyneighbournude.xxx and they found she drilled all holes and cameras to her neighbours house.

I think you've missed the point. And no-one is your servant, well unless you have a butler I guess. ;)

one has a butler, a nanny and a skivvy!!!

In all seriousness though, no need for plod to divulge anything and I would expect if you were to ask you would politely be told to foxtrot oscar (in NATO speak!)
