I've recently visited the seaside and would like to try a little project. All the images are square crops and I want to create a Polaroid frame for them. Looked on line and there are a number of free templates that you can download. I worry about clicking on DOWNLOAD with all the scams around, reluctant to press the button. Created one in Photoshop and it's not too bad. Any suggestions?

I use them for a lot of PNG files and never have an issue. There are multiple "download" buttons but you want the one right under the image that says "free download" it will to the Captcha process then automatically download.

If you're still struggling let me know the photo you want and I will download it for you.
 
I like doing things myself. So creating things like that is all part of my hobby.

But yes, you are wise to be cautious about downloading things. Especially on some operating systems.
Suggestion: Do it in a VM (virtual machine) if you want to be safe. By isolating any infection.
1) Install a VM application, like Virtual Box.
2) Install an operating system inside the VM, such as Ubuntu.
3) Start the OS, and download and inspect the frame file, all inside the VM.
4) If it all looks good, copy it to your normal OS.

Experience with installing applications, and some spare space on your PC required.
It depends on how safe you want to be.

I've emphasized the point with my wife, "Don't click on anything!" So, last week, up popped a BREXIT vote and she decided she wanted to add her name to her selected choice. NO! Next minute, virus warning. I told her off a bit.

Clicked and downloaded from that link I sent you. You have to appreciate these people offering things for free have to make money so they fill their websites with adverts. Every time you click they make a little bit of money so it is in their best interest for the adverts to say "Download Here" just use your due diligence. Hover over the download button. If the link on it doesn't match the site then don't click. Look for the adword symbol in the corners as well. If the virus alert pops up and you can't close it, then turn off your PC. Most of it is designed so you click through as it can't instantly download install unless you command it to. The true exception being actual viruses which have pretty much dropped off now as there is more money in using your machine as a redirect for data than there is holding your files to ransomed.

Don't download templates, download the image and modify it, create your own template.

Here's how to do it...
  • Go to Google, click on Images, you will find that link roughly in the top right hand corner, between Gmail link and a blue Sign in button.
  • Type in the search bar something like "Polaroid photo frame" or if you want to, "Polaroid photo frame translate background PNG"
  • Pick (as many) any of the images you like, preferably if possible, pick any of them with the largest size as possible (that's image size not file size)
  • Right-click on the image, click Save Picture As... (or something like that, depending on what browser you use) then save the image to whatever folder you use.
  • Close browser, open folder, open Photoshop, import the image from folder into Photoshop, like drag-and-drop or do it the old fashion way, File - Open
  • Depending on which image you downloaded, and what format it is in, like JPEG or PNG, sometimes when you drag and drop into Photoshop, sometimes it will lock the layer as Background, or it may not lock the layer. Assuming if it did lock the layer as Background, then unlock it.
  • Create a blank Layer and move it to the bottom, rename layer something as Place photo here and lock this one.
  • Go back up to the layer with the Polaroid image, click on the layer to active it so you would work on it.
  • Use whatever tools you prefer, whichever you find a lot easier to work with, Marquee Tool, Lasso Tool, or Quick Selection Tool, whichever you prefer, to select around where the image normally would be.
  • If you selected correctly, just delete it, this will create a hole in the Polaroid.
  • Lock this one.
  • Click on the bottom layer to active it, but leave it locked.
  • Just drag and drop or use Place to import any of your photos into Photoshop, normally they would automatically create a layer between bottom and top (the top layer being the Polaroid frame).
  • Adjust your photo as you see fit, move it around, resize it.

I prefer to make my own which is better than downloading a template, after all as you said, worry about clicking on the "DOWNLOAD" button with all the scams around.
 
PS: I forgot to mention that you should save your file as a Photoshop file, when you place your own photos into it and frame it to look like a Polaroid image you want, just export it as JPEG image. Close file without saving, so you could use your own template again and again.
 
@mossienet Oh by the way, if you find making your own template a bit of a struggle, I could give you a copy of my template file for you to open in Photoshop and create your own Polaroid images.
