Hi Guys and Gals. My missis is looking for a new point and shoot, we are on a bit of a budget due to one thing or another and need it to be £130 or under. I know we arnt going to get the best available for that but still...

Ideally im looking for the most bang for our buck, Havent a clue where to start, I did do a search on here but couldnt find something in the right price range.

Any help would be appreciated.

Cheers :)

Difficult to know what to suggest. What's your other half's interest level regarding photography? Is she looking for a total point-and-shoot, or is she interested enough to be looking for something where she can take manual control occasionally? Will the camera be for pub shots, dogs and kids, holiday..? Does it HAVE to be pink?...

lol, doesnt have to be pink, in fact I would discourage it. she is looking for an all rounder, more about taking pics of day to day life than of drunkin friends getting hammered in clubs.... saying that she may get a few pictures of drunken me :)

That helps a bit! :)

I think one of the most important - and one of the most lacking in P&S cameras - is a decent enough wide end to its zoom range. I would make this a priority when sorting your top 10 list of options. As well as a nice optical zoom range (obviously don't consider digital zooms!), if it's day to day life you're looking to bag, the wider the lens then the more context you can potentially grab in the shot.

Megapixels aren't a consideration at all if you're looking to post pics on Bookface, and they're only mildly relevant if you're doing home printing - I don't think anything these days is for sale new with less than 10mp. I wouldn't make megapixels a critical consideration, especially if you've got the DSLR for family portraits and photographically important occasions.

I've set out my idea of your stall, but haven't had a look for a suitable camera to meet those stipulations yet. See whether you'd agree with the above, and we can work from there :)

I would certainly agree with the above....
To be honest, she will do the odd bit of printing but the majourity of her bits will likely end up on social networking sites or in small frames, you right when you say what the most basic camers produce MP wise and that would def be enough for her needs.
I really appreciate you help with this as I have been left stumped!

Cool stuff. Okay, let's pitch in a camera well under budget and see what you think..

10x optical zoom, from 28-280 (35mm equivalent). That's not a bad range, but we might be able to do better on the wide end (I dunno, we'll look! LOL!)

It's 16mp, which seems about normal these days, and I would imagine the images would down-sample nicely for tweeting etc.

It doesn't have Wifi, so instant posting of photos to Twitter, FB etc isn't possible. Might that be important? Not sure how much that kind of feature adds to the price yet..

I don't actually know much about what's good at the moment but seeing as you're not getting too far I would say that in my experience Panasonic/Lumix rarely offer a poor camera at this end of the market. Try an amazon search for a couple of models and have read of the user reviews.

I bought a Panasonic from Argos's ebay shop a while ago.

They currently have these two that stand out as being decent options.

Those all look good.. 25mm equivalent wide angle, which is healthy! I agree, Panasonics are good performers in their price bracket.

Of them all, I think the Olympus stands out to me.. but it's not being bought for me! ;)

The Olympus is also Eye-fi compatible, so if instant sharing becomes something you later wish you'd got, it's an option you can add. :)
