so there's all great reviews, happy forum members with the S95. Seems to be a good compact, but with the SX220 being cheaper, more zoom and being a point and shoot image quality is marginal apparently. Although I'm sure the S95 is better indoors.

Thoughts on SX220 over the S95?
 
I don't own the S95 but I find the images from the 220 really quite good for a camera of this size and price, it should also be noted that the HS after its name stands for High Sensitivity, it delivers great images in low light. I looked on Flickr to see the quality and was quite surprised. I love mine as its so small i take it everywhere with me.
 
The SX220 is a superzoom with a small sensor, the S95 is a standard zoom with a 50% larger sensor. If you don't need the longer zoom I'd get the S95 for the improved IQ

but as a point and shoot lets say 99% of the time in auto will the IQ be visible for the difference in price?
 
I have a Canon G11 (very similar to the S95) and the image quality is outstanding and I hardly ever take it off 'Program'. If you buy the S95 you will be amazed at the quality of its images produced.
 
What is your priority? IQ or price?
 
I started a thread over on POTN as a kind of review with sample shots. I've also posted some architecture shots, mostly using the SX220's zoom, here on TP. The latter are all the same kind of subject, but together with the POTN thread, they should give you a good idea of what the SX220 is capable of.
 
I'm in a similar situation the s95 looks very good but I do hAve a Dslr and want something to carry out and about when traveling, the room is a must I think, shame there is no raw on this or would be a good choice! How about the lumix tz range ?

don't really like the panasonic, personal choice having played and felt it in comparison.

S95 - IQ and low light ticks the boxes for me, as most are baby/ toddler shots
vs
Sx220 - zoom to get those undisturbed shots of toddler playing outside, i think about 8fps vs 1 fps (s95) which means capture those action shots more

not fussed with raw, as i'm sure the camera will live on auto and jpeg most of the time.

how long has the s95 been out? will there be a replacement in the near future?

garryknight. nice links and shots. makes me think and swing towards the sx220 more.
 
im leaning towards the sx220 , seems cheaper (much cheaper..) and as you say the auto is going to be quite good on it... raw is a 'bonus' but feel zoom / price/ size swings it for the sx220 , id be interested to see more evening shots taken on the sx220 and low light stuf
 
S95 has been out less than a year.

If you're going to leave it on auto and jpeg I think you won't be using the S95 to its full potential, so maybe better saving some cash and going for the other one.
 
probably live in my wife bag for when she goes out with the little one.

so jpeg auto/ programme mode probably not much in it between the two?
 
I disagree about not getting the most from the S95 if it lives in Program / Full Auto. I love my G11 in Program and the images it produces are outstanding. The camera's intelligence and metering is better than my 450D.
 
Don't no much about the SX220 but have the S95 for nearly a year now, and have to say its a brilliant little camera, use dor digiscoping and holidays and am very impressed with its quality.

it says the GPS is always on even when camera is off? Does that mean it's continuosly drawing power from the battery?
 
replacment for the s95 is out soon id imagen - perhaps if that has a longer zoom it will be the perfect camera ?

I don't have the 230, mine is the 220. However, it says in the Photography Blog review:

"The GPS is set to off as a default and to enable it, you have to go into the main menu, go to settings and scroll down to the GPS sub menu."

That review is well worth a read.
