Can you recommend me a point and shoot camera, whatever make. I am looking for something that I can carry about the town with a decent optical zoom and IS preferably, i am not interested in video. My budget is £250 top and I don't mind a second hand camera. Would love the Canon G11 but :( too pricey.

It's got to be the Canon s95. Amazing little compact, 4 x Optical zoom. I don't go anywhere without mine. Fits in a shirt pocket, takes RAW and produces great images.

Oh yes and it has IS!

IQ is quality for a compact. took it to liverpool and got a few snaps trying it out. done nothing to these pics just stuck them in iPhoto then exported to photobucket.

I think that i will go for the Canon s95. Thank you all
 
I recommend it as well although you'll probably struggle to get a new one for £250 although prices will be lower now that the S100 has been released.
