Pocket Wizards - Help!

OK - I know naff all about these things, and it's only an idea at the moment - not a firm plan. I might be having a different approach at the Pipistrelle Bats.

I have a Sekonic L558 meter with the radio transmitter module which should (I'm told) trigger the PW at up to 100 feet. The only pics I've seen of these things shows them plugged into the camera hot shoe.

1. Surely it has to be plugged into the side of the camera in the remote cable socket to fire the shutter, when obviously it will fire a flash mounted in the camera hot shoe?

2. If I want it to fire the camera and a remote flash detached from the camera would I need two Pocket Wizard receivers or would it fire the two devices set to the same channel?

3. How would a remote flash sync with the shutter?

Confused of Walsall. :thinking:
 
Did you get the RT32 module with the 558 ?

Radio Triggering Mode (with optional RT-32 Module)
Turn power OFF. Remove Connector cover inside battery
compartment. Insert optional RT-32 Module. Turn Power
ON. Hold MODE key in while turning the JOG WHEEL to
RADIO FLASH TRIGGERING MODE, a blinking channel
number will appear. Turn JOG WHEEL to select channel
number. To select Quad-Triggering sub-channels , , , ,
simply press the direct function keys: AVE/ , ISO 1 ,
ISO 2 or M.Clear on the control panel. Pressing the
measure button once returns the screen to the main menu.
Pressing the measure key again simultaneously fires flash
and measures light.

Yes Ian the transmitter module is fitted.

Erm, Am I being a bit dense about this? If the PW fires the camera, the camera will fire a master flash in the hot shoe anyway and in turn fire a flash set as a slave at a remote location as long as they're (the two flashes) set to the same channel?

Me 'ead hurts. :D
 
LOL. The Sekonic Manual specifically mentions the Pocket Wizard as being compatible with the transmitter. I know we have members who use these things so I'll wait for someone to throw light into my darkness. :thinking:

Not yet, and as I say it's only the germ of an idea and it might not go anywhere. And stop saying (s) plural. :gag:

I can't answer your light meter questions as I don't have that light meter.

About the PWs. You need two pocket wizards for the system to work. One is the master and fires the slave. They both have to be on the same channel, but any PW in range on the same channel will fire (this is why pro sports shooters will spend the little extra to get a custom channel put into their PWs).

The PW talks to your flash via the PC sync port. Unfortunately for Canon users not using a 580 EXII, this means an additional flash accessory to make your flash talk to the PW. But you can use Nikon flash units fired with a PW with your Canon camera.

That helps quite a bit thank you. So if you need two - do they come in pairs anyway?

They don't normally come in pairs, but that link that Ian linked to has a set that includes 'a receiver and a transmitter'. I put them in quotations as it is a little misleading, as all PWs are the same, you just set them to be a transmitter or receiver.

The cheaper ones only have 4 channels, and it is more likely that you might run into someone running on the same channel.
