Now i know it goes on and all that but where i live is a holiday/working farm and just yesterday a nasty poacher shot a deer in full view of a holiday maker. she shot on to private land from a track towards accommodation.
Apart from being stupid and dangerous the female deer had a baby.

If that's what happened, she broke more laws than you can shake a stick at. What did the police say when you told them?

Poachers = all are criminals.
All criminals are vermin.

I was not there. it was reported by the holiday maker and our landlord has seen enough evidence to go to the police we have all been asked to keep an eye open and if we see and have camera's with us get photo's.

this is all new to me so was shocked not as i say i know it goes on but the Deer had young still. horrible person.

Maybe a few signs like this might deter :)

Now that is an Idea.. i may just pass that on.

I can't honestly say I think it's a good idea to be pointing cameras at someone who's already shown that degree of criminal recklessness (unless it's a GoPro taped to a shotgun). :(

I hear what your are saying, i think what the landlord meant was if we should see anything such as strangers, no way am i going to point a camera at someone with a gun. ( ok i have in the past but...) he also said do not confront the person just phone the police.

Considering the penalties for this sort reckless and dangerous activitiy, surely the money to be made from poaching can't be that much?

Mind you I think sometimes the police can be a bit blase about guns in the countryside.

I remember a couple of years ago I came across a chap standing on a public road shooting into a field. Discretion being the better part of valour I didn't stop, but rang the police when I got into the office. They rang back to say it was ok, he was a farmer and had a licence for the gun to shoot vermin. They said it was safer for him to stand on the road and shoot into the field than to stand in the field. I pointed out that he was standing less than 100 yards from a small hospital car park which was in from on him about 30 degrees to his right. They weren't interested.

I view poachers as the lowest form of animal life, the people involved in poaching are often criminal gangs, they are not nice people and should never be approached.
Anyone caught poaching with firearms is in very serious trouble, with offences ranging from armed trespass through to firearms offences, and a lot of people who have tried to approach them have been fired at - it's very much a job for armed police, but unfortunately due to the time that it takes for them to reach rural areas, the poachers usually get away. The police do though take it very seriously when reported.

One of the many problems with armed poachers is that they are very likely to be in illegal possession of their firearms. They aren't likely to be skilled at using them, or to have the right calibre, with the result that there is inevitable suffering, with animals failing to go down and running off. In the past I've had to shoot badly injured deer that I've found on my own land, using my very powerful centrefire rifle. I've found that the deer have been injured by dogs, and by tiny .22 rifles suitable only for rabbits...

...

Very much so, Garry.

As i said i am not going near said person if i see him/her and it is sad that these morons just don't know better. This is all a big learning curve for me shoplifters were the bain of my life where i used to live.

Gary it is the suffering i was worried about. And I hope the nasty person shoots himself in the foot.

You would not believe how many poachers use .22's, we're constantly finding Deer on our estate that have been maimed because of idiots using Rimmy's. Definitely pond scum, it's also coincidental that this always happens when some Pikey's are camping in another estate illegally, tearing about with the quadbikes and breaking into my garage :( Last year alone they shot at our dog, stole my welder, motorbike and other tools. The police turned up 48 hours later and wrote a few details down but because the travellers move soo often they never get caught :(

Guarantee that if you returned fire on them the police would have been round double quick!!

Exactly, it would be all too different if somebody stood up to them and pointed the barrel in their direction.....

No travelers around here that i know of. and we are very remote so it could be anyone really.

Same goes for putting up funny signs "threatening" violence. Some police officers have no sense of humour and a sign like that could cause problems if push ever comes to shove.
