Hi, I'm spending this weekend in Plymouth for the Navy days and I'm going early Friday, so I'll have the afternoon free. Does anyone recommend any where good in that area? I'm thinking of spending Friday afternoon on Dartmoor, but open to other ideas. I realise there are probably loads of places, but just wondered if there are any really good places. I also have the evenings free, but I'm thinking wondering down to the coast for some sunset shots.

im not from plymouth directly but i do know of someone who enjoyed shooting down by the harbour.

as for dartmoor, i have taken a few shots up there myself, unfortunately most of them are over on the east side or north moor but coombstone tor, grey weathers stone circle and two bridges are where i have got my favourite shots (the spelling may be wrong on some of those!).

The Hoe is a good place to go. Go up the old lighthouse for a panoramic view. If the weather's a bit dodgy (or even if the weather's good but you fancy a look into a photographic Alladin's cave!), head a bit east and pay Mifsuds in Brixham a visit. While you're in Brixham (and near Mifsuds), carry on a mile or 3 until you hit Berry Head. For sunset, find somewhere with a good view very slightly north of due west, maybe overlooking Rame Head.

Rame head isn't too bad, although sunset can be just in the wrong location for some good shots.

Dartmoor is always a good idea and there is loads to shoot around the Burrator reservoir (the only place I have shot as it's within cycling distance of Plymouth). For example Sheeps Tor is always a good one, and there is also a stone circle and line just after the tor (Down Tor) to the East of Burrator Reservoir. Here's a few of my better shots of Dartmoor (most you should be able to work out where they are by the names). I think my Flickr also has some more photos too, and they are mostly geotagged.

As for Plymouth itself the Hoe, seafront and the Barbican are beautiful places to shoot too. You can always go down at night too so get some extra shooting time in. Again another gallery of shots from there. :)

try to shoot brunel's bridge and some views of saltash ferry

The Barbican, & while you're there pay Captain Jaspers a visit, usually quite a few bikes & bikers/'characters'

Thanks for the replies. I'll try and see what I can do. I think I'll have a look where Brunel's bridge is.

About 10 minutes walk from my gaff or 2 minutes in the car.

If you are coming by car, carry on along the A38 heading towards Cornwall, just before you go over the road bridge over the Tamar take a left into the car park, Brunels bridge will be right in front of you.

Where do you think this was taken from?

It looks like just off the A369? I assume the white road just of the green road. Sorry for lack of detail.

Steetmap location

About 120 miles from Plymouth!

Really? I thought it was in Bristol. I'm going past Bristol on the way to Plymouth, so I may take a slight detour.

Yup, and Bristol is about 120 miles from Plymouth!

From the hills in the city you can get good sunsets over the dockyards.
