Please put out some water for the birds in these very dry conditions
Our wildlife needs you
I have a 4 arm feeder with a single water trough, I put 2 x 1ltr jugs per day
The birds are on it as soon as a walk away
I also have a plate on the ground and a bucket full to the brim , The little ones love it.

You will get sh-t for thanks

My wife is outside as I write loading about 15 feeders and a couple of bird "baths".
We have House Martins nesting in one gable end nest, bigger than last-years, and a multitude of other birds - Robins, Coaltits Blue tits, Jackdaws, Magpies, a Buzzard, visiting Woodpecker, Swallows, and others yet o be identified. Lots of berries and fruit coming on the bushes, plenty of bees in the flowering bushes and buttercups, some Butterflies and other insects, so it's becoming a really nice place to be for wildlife and us. So well worth not pruning and mowing so aggressively. I just need to get out on the patio with the big lens and gimbal and starting shooting!

There's hardly a moment during the day when a bird isn't drinking from our pond cascades and some larger ones go into the pond a few inches at the shallow end where they can stand and have a jolly good wash 'n brush up which is very important in keeping their feathers in tip-top condition. The smaller birds do that on the cascades. They seem to love it. Always on the look-out,though. Head in head out, wings in wings out ....stop, look up and around... and carry on. I think word must get round where to come..lol.

Good post.

I put out wild bird feed regularly, with gaps in supply so that they don't become dependant on a single source of supply, but never even thought about water until your post.

They now have water too and it's clear that I need to get a much bigger container - thanks for giving me another responsibility:)

Good post, we have a garden wildlife pond , the birds do like to drink and bath in it

My mum has a pond that the birds drink from, there is also a bird bath for them to go to but at the moment she is awaiting a double hip replacement so can't get into the garden to keep it filled up :(

We don't often feed, though depends on time of the year.

The one thing we ensure is our 2 sources of water are topped up and, more so cleaned out every so often.
One is 'conventional' recon stone and the other is large but shallow rectangular pot tray (approx. 1.5m x 0.3m

They do visit both for drinking & bathing.

PS in regard to food ...
Our Berberis is smothered with berries and the Blackbird(s) are already benefitting from them

Our Pyracanthas should have a bumper crop of berries, one especially had the most flowers we ever recalled seeing on it! That bodes well for another good crop beloved by the Blackbird, Robin + Wood Pigeons. Oh, we also have some Ivy that we never seem to get round to tackling and birds always find some berries there too come the Autumn.

PPS re: water in the garden ~ we have spoken about one for ages. Not a lot of room in the back garden that also has a level change but an area of say up to max 6x3 foot might be acceptable though smaller I think would be better to SWMBO ?

Since the bird fanatics are watching.....can I remind people that if they do feed (and it's a little controversial) then please make sure you disinfect your feeders - lots of birds are dying from diseases passed on at feeders ;(

You can either do as the BBC recommend and invest in some "veterinary disinfectant" or follow the more sensible route - 50:50 warm water and white vinegar. Soak an empty feeder for 10 mins, hang up to dry and then refill.

Bird bath, water feature and small hanging plate refilled every morning about 06.00

Ungrateful bunch of b@ggers in our garden

They keep drinking from the dogs bowl and we keep refreshing it if we see them do that.

Put that nice shiny bowl out of reach of the dog for the birds and give the dog a hidden bowl.

The bloody birds ignore the one for them now
