Id like to invest in a new tripod for my 40d. My budget has already been a little stretched having set some aside for glass.

I wont be using a tripod in any particularly "testing" conditions, just a bit of indoor and outdoor in pretty fair weather.

Is it possible to pick up something decent for £40 or so or am I dreaming?

If so, any recommendations for my best options please.

Thanks.

I have a Manfrotto 785B which happily supports my 450D + Kit Lens. Not sure about a 40D though. Try finding the weight of the camera/lens combo you would need it to support as the 785B only supports 1KG.

But yeah, Manfrotto 785B, only around £50 and is a nice bit of lightweight kit.

Not sure about the weight of the 40d, but could be worth popping down to your local Asda as they sell 'Hama Star 42' tripods for £9.99 and they are 100% better than any other £10 tripod I've ever seen.

I find it copes well with my 300d, grip and a 70-200mm lens I borrowed from a friend.

They usually have a display model there and are happy to let you have a play with it, so you could take your camera in with you if you wanted to check it's suitability

Obviously not as good as a Manfrotto, but it is less than a tenner.

I have THIS as like yourself, I wanted a decent tripod on a smaller budget.

Its fantastic, I would recommend it 100 times over. The head is great and its a sturdy design and build. Its rated to 8KG load.

At your request, if you want, tomorrow I could post some pics.

If you can stretch a bit further on cash, the redsnapper is a good buy.

£100 for the tripod & head (You get a 10% discount for being a TP member)

It is really well made, sturdy & holds the weight of my 40D with ease.

It's the lowest priced, best quality tripod i could find.

I was gonna get a manfrotto, but im glad i went with the redsnapper.

If you buy really cheap, it's usually exactly what you get.

Manfrotto 190XPROB & 804RC2 head £125 will last your lifetime and do anything you want.
Buy one for life.

For £40 I'd go for a Velbon Ultra Maxi or Luxi (secondhand)

I picked up a Ultra Maxi SF for just £30 off ebay, brand new!!

Great tripod, not as sturdy as £100 Manfrotto's but excellent for the price. plus the bonus, it's a travellers delight. Fold up real small and easily carried outside or even INSIDE a backpack

Give it a serious consdieration. Some new one are about £70+ but I think Morris have the Luxi for £50 on special at the mo.

Velbon has more class than a Hama or unbranded ebay cheapo. It's not a Giottos, but it ain't a £9.99 Jessops wobbler either!

with the rednapper and ball head can you have the camera in portrait view as well as landscape?

For the price, I'd say this would be just about impossible to beat. The ball head looks pretty good too.

The only drawback I can see, is the compass.......

Reminds me of all those cheap chinese toys that you get that has a little compass included:lol:

I have one of these and they are very good and easy to use.

Is possible to get ball heads as well if desired for £40-50 later.

Yup it sure does, there's a notch in the ball head fitting so you can do portrait as well, works pretty well, i used it that way for some firework shots i took last week

I have always maintained that there is no free lunch...nowhere!

Stretch your budget to get a decent manfrotto 055 Pro or similar. That is if you plan to use it more than twice a year of course;)

Redsnapper, comparable to Manfrotto 190 PRO but half the price with more extras

^ As above. : )

I got mine delivered yesterday and it's amazing value for money. It's sturdy, looks good and comes with a bag and strap :D

Got to agree that Redsnapper is the way to go. Excellent quality.

ordered my redsnapper and ball head yesterday!!

cheers joe!

Thank you for all your suggestions, really helpful.

This afternoon, I was looking through a cupboard, and guess what I've found, a tripod!

Back from my 35mm SLR days so perhaps 10 years old.

It's a Centon PV23 (Jessops) one. Mint condition, think I only ever used it indoors, looks relatively sturdy and has a quick release platform, standard type of 3 way head.

No idea on the weight rating though.

Would you trust this with a 40d and zoom lens weight, should it be ok?

received my tripod and had a quick go with it.

its ****ing great.!!

quality craftsmanship and solid as a rock.
