I want to upgrade my puny printer but do not want one of the A3s as the chair of my camera club will print using his huge Epson printer - this is bigger than the Epson 3000 series. What I would like is something that will print my other stuff, possibly up to A4 but mostly 7x5 or thereabouts. I have heard that Canon works well out of the box; I don't want to have a degree to use it! If it could have another function like copying that would be handy but not vital. Hope you can help - would then try and find it at Photo show next weekend. Thanks

Hi

I went from an Epson printer, which I didn't really get on with to a Canon iP Pixma printer and was the best choice I made. I'd certainly recommend one and have done lots of time - even FIL swapped over having seen my prints.

And yes, it worked straight out the box. I have only used genuine inks and never had any issues with it.

The multifunction version of the printer is as good if you need the scanner option.

An issue is how you want to use it, specifically whether black and white is important. I have a Canon MG5250 and it is brilliant for colour (for an absolute printing beginner, I should say). I've used Canon inks; there are 5, C M Y and two blacks. I've also got access to a Canon 6350 at another location that has 6 inks, including a grey. Black and white prints on the first one can be fine, but can come out with a slight colour cast. I haven't had enough experience yet to know how much better (if any) the 6350 is. I have heard, from a reliable source (but who was possibly talking about higher spec printers) that Epsons are better for black and white.

By the way, the printer dialogue in Aperture for the two printers is different. IIRC the 5250 gives easy access to a wider range of paper profiles (even if they are generic). I've been using Kodak premium glossy from WHS, bought in a sale, so you can see how cheapskate and amateur I really am!

Any chance you could try and get a test shot printed on your shortlisted printers?

:ty:Hi. Thanks for replying. I was going to put something on a memory stick so glad you think that's worth a go. Will note these down... Thanks again.

Those specific models will likely not be available, they turn consumer models around so often. Similar ones will, though. The other difference I noted was paper flow; the 5250 has a weird collapsible rear feed that causes some problems where mine is located. You'd see these things if someone demonstrated them, I think; it's just a bit hard in the usual consumer tech stores!
