Please recommend a camera.

Hi i'm new here.:wave:

I'm not sure where to post this but tomorrow I plan on buying a camera. I've been researching online but to be truthful I don't know much about cameras and most of the key features given don't mean much to me. I am looking for the best camera that budget price between £100-180 will give me. With zoom obviously for both photos and video, and good battery life; those are the main things.

Please help me.

Hi welcome to TP.

I've previously owned ricoh and fuji compacts and been pleased with their results.

My only other advice, is that more pixels does not necessarily mean better pictures.
 
for that price you could buy a good bridge with most things a dslr has maybe a fuji s2000hd
 
That's a big question, and the choice is vast. But there are not many duff cameras about, certainly not from the major brands.

But whatever you want to do, Canon and Panasonic consistently come out top of more reviews, in more sectors, than most others. Pani are pretty much unique in their range of wide-angle compacts, if that's your thing.

I was going to suggest those two brands as well - Canon and Panasonic. I have a Panasonic FS-20 and it is a great little camera for when the DSLR isn't taken with us. Easy to use and the missus loves using it as well. Only limitation is the zoom with the video you are looking for. It will zoom, but not while recording.

If I had to search for a compact again I wouldn't hesitate looking at the Pannys and would definitely throw some of the Canons in the mix.
 
I have just ordered a Panasonic Lumix TZ6 for her indoors at around £220. Jessops had them on sale but not sure what they are now. I bought mine from www.camerabox.co.uk who i have bought from before. I have done allot of scratching around and this for me has the best image quality for £ and is by far the best value for money.

I took the pic below literally 3 mins after opening my new camera - Panasonic Lumix TZ6. I just put it on iAuto mode and took the snap. To say i'm please would be an understatement! I have seen images from this camera compared to other better cameras and the Lumix images were better, sharper that the others which is why i went for it. Worth every penny.

I think alot of people overate DSLRs these days and everyone who thinks they know everything compare cameras by Megapixels. I got the new 22MP camera etc etc. You get a camera for what your going to use it for if that made any sense. If your doing portrait photography then get a half decent DSLR such of a fuji film for a beginner. They are digital user friendly they tend to have 6MP mr more which is fine for A4 prints and even the larger A3 printing. If your going to take millions of little snaps at clubs and parties then get a standard compact. Sony cybershots or canon powershots are the top models from my research. If your willing to spend the extra money i honestly think with a bit of practice and time you will produce some brilliant pictures with this. It has a great right up and its only £199 for a Fuji DSLR 10Mp which is pretty good up there with the top brands. Built in zoom face detection mode and if you like it video mode to?

suppose you might be right but looks more like a dslr than a point and shoot to me. My view of a point and shoot or terminology would be like a canon compact camera.

It's styled to look like a DSLR on the outside but the insides are very different! DSLR stands for "digital single lens reflex" and it's the reflex system in DSLRs that seperates them from other cameras like the S1000fd and other "point and shoot" cameras or "compacts" or whatever you want to call them! I've got the S1000fd's (sort of) predecessor the Fuji S5800 and while it's a great point and shoot camera (and one I still own and use!), it's a long way behind any DSLR in terms of image quality!

I've always rated Fuji point and shoot cameras very highly (I've owned 3), I've also used Canon and Sony point and shoot cameras and I've been very impressed with both those brands too although the Canon was better than the Sony.

Something like this would be a great place to start: http://www.argos.co.uk/static/Produ...2/2|cat_12109590|Digital+cameras|12109607.htm It will work really well on it's "auto" setting (where you'd turn it on, press the button, and it takes a photo) but it will have plenty of settings for you to mess about with should you want to get creative!
