hi there i was wondering if someone could give me a little guidance. i have just got into photography....... i bought the canon 600d. and am looking for a flash and to be honest cant afford the 580ex which i would like!!! could someone please tell me the best for me between the 550ex and the 430ex. its for taking family pictures at parties etc. any help would be great thanks Gary

thanks for taking the time to reply....... will have a look thanks again

Have a look at the Nissin range of flashes. The Di622 is similar in power and features to the Canon 430EX and and the Di866 is similar to the 580EX. I've got a 580EX II and I've also got 2 Di866's and the 2 Di866's cost me roughly the same as the 580. The Nissin's are very good and can be got for around £90-100 for the Di622 and around £180-200 for the Di866.

and what about if you had the choice of 550 or the 430?

Stolen from another forum...

550EX is the more capable and powerful of the two, with more features but is older. The 430EX may actually be a better off-camera slave, if you're using something like the YN-622c triggers and multiple lights.

The 550EX can only do two groups (A,B)
The 430EX, 430EXII, 580EX and 580EXII can do three (A,B,C)
The 600EX-RT can do five (A,B,C,D,E)

The 550EX has more power, can be used as a master, does 1/128th power, has an external battery pack port, and can do MULTI (stroboscopic) mode. However, both it and the 430EX can only swivel 270-degrees, and neither one has a sync port.

So what do you need? Power, control, strobe etc.
I'd still go for the Yongnuo myself - all the capability of the 580EXII, just a little less power, especially if you throw in a pair of 622c triggers if you want off camera stuff (which you will!).

g so much information lol....... am lost David i just need a flash that will help take half decent photos at parties? etc. as i said i am totally new to this. What are 622c triggers? and what are your thoughts on the nissin range? Will the Yongnuo set itself to my camera? any help is appreciated Rgards Gary

First, I believe all the flashed mentioned are TTL compatible, so will work in 'easy mode' with the 600d. In other words, you can just let the camera work out how much flash to use for any given shot and not worry about it.

I presume the 600d has a built in flash, so if all you want is a more powerful ('brighter' version of that, any or all the above should work (I would ask someone who knows the nissin to confirm this).

If you go down this route, you will take nicely exposed, but rather flat images very little effort. If that's your aim (which is fine and dandy!) forget all the other features / triggers etc.

If you want to go further, then I'd recommend something like "The Speedliter's handbook" which is nice and simple read and will open up a whole world of new possibilities. If you have in mind that you may want to try to push it a bit, that's when I'd be looking at buying something like the Yongnuo flash (£130) and a pair of 622c triggers (£40) as a cheap way of getting a decent flash and allowing you to use the flash when it's not attached to the camera.

I totally agree with the Yongnuo YN-568EX II recomendation.
It's (very near) as good as Canon 580EX II and lot cheaper.

YN622c are radio triggers. They allow us to fire the flash with it out of the cameras hot shoe.
But, since the Yongnuo YN-568EX II has an optical slave mode, it can actually be fired by your 600D flash. To begin, that's all you need. ;)
