Hi all

I usually use portable studio strobes for outdoor shoots, but tomorrow I plan to use my st-e2 with 2 x 580EXII.

How do I set it up on a 1D3 if I want the ambient exposure to be -1 stop, the key light (shoot-though brolley) to be normally exposed and then have a rimlight at +1?

Presumably I set EC on camera to -1, ratio 1:2 brolley:rimlight. But how do I make sure the brolley is +/- 0 and the rimlight +1?

Many thanks in anticipation

Phil

My take on this Phil (and it may be wrong) is that you need to set the FEC on the 580's.....one to 0 and one to +1 and then set the body's FEC to -1.
The 580's FEC will be active if the 580 is a slave and mounted off camera. If the 580 is a master then the body's FEC will override it. Using the ST-E2 prevents that override.

Hmm - that makes sense - thanks. So what ratio would I set? 1:1 then?

Interesting - I just found this:

2. You can set the Master and Slaves to ETTL, and if you set them all to the SAME group A, you can set FEC individually on each flash. If you put Master and Slave in different groups, A and B, the FEC on the Master rules. I spent a whole afternoon working this out with Canon Tech Support. We each tested it with our own equipment.

If that's true - whack them both in group A, set rimlight to +1 or +2 and leave the other at 0 & leave the camera FEC at 0!
