Hello

Firstly, the shots i have taken are just random crap, just testing the lens etc, just point and shoot rubbish lol

Anyway,

about 4 or 5 days days ago my canon 70-200mm f4 is lens arrived. Great! I have taken loads of pictures, but i have noticed something, despite their being NO dust whatsoever on the lens, i am getting weird dots and lines...

Its not the camera as i have checked it with my other lens, therefore the problem i think must lie with the lens, but how? there is no dust on there and its brand new. Considering i just spent like £850 on a lens and i'm getting imperfections like that i'm quite dissapointed.

Could somebody take a look at 4 random photos and let me know what you think? Especially the last 2, they are very prominent.

It seems if i point it at the sky the marks are very prominent, other times they just seem blurry, the "line" is the main issue i think cause it is very visible.

Could it be dust inside my lens? or a hair? what should i do?

Please could somebody help and let me know what you think?

Thankyou

Edit: The first 2 arent visible since they have just been uploaded , typical

Hi, welcome to TP :)
It looks like sensor dust to me, were they shot with a small aperture?
Put a different lens on and shoot a plain sky, light coloured wall or ceiling at f16 or even smaller, you can use manual focus and have the wall out of focus. Then check for the line & spots on the computer viewing at 100%.
Just had another look at your pics. The first was shot at f4 and there are no marks visible, the next was f9 and is OK. The next 2 were at f18 & f29 and the marks are visible. That is to be expected with sensor dust.

Yep I think that's sensor dust too; very clear at small apertures, not so clear at wider ones, as evidenced by the exif data on Flickr. As Kev says, try your other lens, but use a small aperture. You should see the same spots and lines. If you do, thats confirmation that it's definitely sensor dust.

Ahh, thanks kev :)

They are visible on other photos, i'll try and upload some more...

So is it worth sending the lens back? does that make it faulty?

Definitely dust. Try a rocket blower first and then take some sample images at f/11 or higher of a wall as above and see if its better

The dust is on the sensor in the camera not on the lens :) It is only visible at small apertures - unless the dust spot is large!
Have a search on here for sensor cleaning blower.

Nonononono! Not the lens, the sensor. It just needs a clean. Quite a few high street place will do this for around £30-£40, or you can have a go yourself-- but be very careful if you do this - you can kill the camera if you muck it up. I am not joking.

OMG!!! thank you guys soooo much!!! :D

I have tested with different lenses at different appetures, and you're right! its on the camera!!!

Soooo pleased!!! lol

You guys really know your stuff :) I really though i'd have to send it back so that is a MASSIVE relief i can tell you :)

As you can tell i'm quite inexperienced, am learning new stuff every day, theres a lot to learn but its fun :)

Thankyou!

Not an uncommon question to be honest:D but glad to have helped.
The dust may have got in when you changed lenses, you need to make sure that the rear element of the lens you are putting on is clean and do it in a clean place. Have the camera switched off and pointing down while you swap lenses.
It will still get in over time though
Lots of threads on here about dust bunnies and also the use of rocket blowers to clean sensors.
