Please help me to buy a good camera

Hi everyone I'm new here and i'm hoping for help in buying a digital camera.I have decided on a canon but there are sooo many and i really dont know enough about cameras to be able to choose one.I had decided to spend around £150 but if anyone can convince me i will get better photos by spending more then i will but i am worried the camera may then be too complicated.I love taking portrait photos of my grandkids and i want some really good ones of my cats and kittens who all have the most beautiful blue eyes. The camera must be simple to use and i really want a 3in screen and would prefer to use ordinary batteries rather than rechargable.Please can anyone help? Angie
