To be honest I have not used any of the Sony's:(

I think you would be better off with the Canon just for the availabilty of lenses and upgrade paths:thumbs:

However i am willing to be shot down in flames:lol:

Really depends what sort of photography you would like to do as well

im being honest here so dont shoot me down too much

i havent used a dslr before and god only know's where i start with the different lenses

i want it for taking photo's of everyday activities of my children
scenic shots
shots of my dogs and reptiles
and to get a good close up shot of craft projects we make and sell

i have been told by several people the way is dslr so this is the avenue i was going to take and come away from compact's

Personaly for me I would go for the 350d 35-80 lens.

Similar to the one I started with. I started with a 400d. You should be able to find one for similar price as the 350d.

Downside for me was I out grew out of it very quickly and moved to a 50d.

Don't get the 300D, long in the tooth now and a little slow, both in startup and use.
I'm guessing you've about £200, so I'd be looking for a Canon 400D with kit lens (18-55).

Canon Digital XT EOS 350D SLR Camera EF 18-55mm Lens

Cracking little start up set, add a cheap 50mm f/1.8II and you will be happy for quite a while :D

Sorry:lol:

Would agree with the others and go for a 400d, they can usually be had 2nd hand for around £250
The 300d is a bit long in the tooth now.

Beware though, its a slippery slope into lens lust and upgrades!!

I know this is going to sound a bit controversial, but are you sure you want an SLR? A good compact will be able to do 99% of what an entry SLR kit can do. I have a Canon Powershot G11 and the image quality would easily match a 350d + 18-55 non-IS under most conditions. Its only when you start wanting to take images with a shallow depth of field, or in low light, will an SLR outshine the Powershot.

Other ‘good’ compacts to consider are:
Panasonic LX3 or LX5
Nikon P7000
Canon Powershot S90
Canon Powershot Pro1

If you do want to use your camera for images in more challenging conditions or with shallow depth of field then please ignore what I have said. I think people would be surprised how good compacts have got in recent years

Heres a quick canon powershot search in flickr: http://www.flickr.com/search/?q=canon+powershot

Better look at Nikons. Canon entry level bodies and particularly their 18-55mm deserve a place next to Holgas and Brownies.

the 18-55mm IS is a great value kitlens.
Canon entry level bodies have always been rated highly.

I would also consider nikons as well, but I certainly wouldn't disregard the canon bodies.

The Sony a200 will give you in body stabilisation, which may be useful if you are shooting things from distance. The a230 was a backward step and is hard to hold comfortably, so I'd avoid if I were you!

The Canon EOS 300D is VERY slow to use...the 350D would be the better option. Bear in mind that both of those Canons have a small LCD compared to the Sonys and have no built in image stabilisation (IS).

Would suggest you google dpreview for the specs and reviews :)

ok thanks all f you for your responces

yes the budget goes upto about 250 pounds

i think i have alot of research to do still

im so thick when it comes to cameras

i would like one that takes fast photo's one after the other if my budget is to allow

That means a fast frame rate.

The fastest you can (just about) get in your budget would probably be the 20D
