Hi, first post here.

I recently sold my dslr and accessories and want to re-invest in a much smaller camera. I have two kids now, and the dslr was too much faffing around. I'm after something small and powerful, but nothing that will break the bank. My budget really is around £600 max. I've been doing quite a lot of research of late, and have narrowed it down to two that i like, but I would appreciate the opinion of this forum.

#1 Canon G7 X Mark II

#2 Panasonic Lumix TZ-100EB

My mind is swaying towards the Canon - I've owned a couple of G series cameras in the past and they have been excellent. I will be mainly taking portraits/landscapes, so I want a good focus, but I also love depth of field.

Advice/opinions would be most welcome.
Thanks

I went for the TZ100. There's a little thread here...

However, for a budget of up to £600 you could take a look at the Panasonic GX80 which at the mo can be had with a 12-32mm for £449 with £100 cashback. Body only £429.

If you're willing to look at a larger camera but still much smaller than a DSLR I'd take a serious look at this as good though the TZ100 is (I've never used the Canon) MFT is better and really APS-C DSLR rivalling in image quality but of course you don't get the zoom range of the TZ100 and another problem is that 12-32mm lens which doesn't have a focus ring. Instead I'd go for the almost as tiny 14-42mm Mega OIS which is a conventional lens with a focus ring.

Just in case you are interested in the GX80 here's a size comparison...

I have the Panasonic LUMIX TZ100EB and it's an awesome little camera. Great quality images, even in low light without flash.

Thanks so much for the advice, very helpful. Today I placed an order for the TZ-100EB. Ironically it was £25 cheaper than yesterday and I get a further £50 redemption off that, so i will get the camera for £475 brand new. I can't complain at that. Looking forward to receiving it, and to trying it on my holiday.

Paid £500 for mine including a spare (Hahnel) battery. Slips into a shirt pocket and has an eye level EVF with dioptre adjustments which were among the deal breaker must haves for me. Not found any major gripes with it yet and used it a fair bit on holiday as a companion to a Fuji CSC kit.

eh? Not my shirt pockets it wont. You must be BIG :D

I'm big as well, for what it's worth.. 6ft 8" but I doubt even my shirt pockets will be big enough! :D

What's the battery like then? Am I advised to get a spare?

I'm not small but not massive! Standard Primark shirt pocket.

Battery life is fine but I always like to have a spare just in case I'm away from any charging possibilities for a couple of days.

Photographic proof that a TZ-100 fits into a shirt pocket! As I said, this was one of the must haves for me. No space for much more than a bus ticket as well but it doesn't snag going in or coming out.

Get "tactical shirts" they are far more suited and designed to carry things.
You could carry 4 of those

Nice light shirt for hot Southern Mediterranean climes. Only need one pocket!

Lol The old Casio elixm s series were shirt pocket cameras that just looks odd! There is probably a gap in the market for a tiny high quality compact but nobody seems to want to risk anything at the minute!

I used to have a Panny LF1 which would fit in my shirt pocket but these high mp tiny sensor compacts just (IMO) produce a mess if you look closely. I had an LX2 years ago and I genuinely think that the LX5 and LF1 (which shares the same sensor as the LX7) were a step back in image quality at low ISO's.

I've thought about replacing the LF1 but Panny don't seem to do a replacement, the new models all seem to have slower apertures.
