Many of you will know, or know of, TP member "Wheels", well on the 11th of April 2011 Julian is planing to do a marathon to raise funds for Blesma - the British Limbless Ex Service Men's Association and needs to raise AT LEAST £1000 in sponsorship for this most worthwhile of causes.

I'll let Julian tell you more, in his own words (details of the octabox follow)

I am doing this because of a chance meeting I had with a remarkable gentleman called Eric Cottam at my Aunty Olga's funeral in January this year. His photograph is on this page. He is a 90 year old WW2 Vetran who lost both legs aged 19 in Belgium. He has written several books documenting his life and luckily enough I have managed to buy two of the books online.

He was so kind in letting me have his electric wheelchair when mine was only good for very short distances. It was like new he explained to me on a recent visit to him that he had only used it twice.

In return I am going to do a 26.2 mile (Marathon) in the wheelchair he kindly donated to me, (with my old 1 as a desperate last back up)
The route is from Boothstown in Salford on the East Lancs Road all the way to Liverpools Albert Dock.

His books proceeds all go to Blesma, so I thought what better way of thanking this gentleman than helping his chosen charity.

By the way I am a wheelchair user following a multitude of incidents and accidents and illnesses.

Meeting Eric has made me sit back and take a look out how lucky I am yet I fight with PTSD and depression as well as my physical disabilities.

Eric I salute you sir.

Please give generously these men and women deserve all our help.

Thank you

Julian (Wheels)
II have here a brand new 170cm octabox with a Bowens S-Fit, these previously sold at £95 and I am looking for the best offer before the closing date of midnight on the 6th of March 2011. All of the money from the winning bid to be donated directly via Julian's JustGiving page.

Once I have confirmation of the donation I will ship the octabox to it's new owner at my expense (UK mainland, excl. H&I only).

Even if you have no need for this item please, please visit Julian's page and donate as much as you can - every penny counts!

Thank you in advance,

Graham

hats off to you boys... never heard of that cause before, but it sounds very worthy. I'll certainly pledge some wedge

Julian... you better not stop anywhere when you get over the merseyside border or your wheels will be on bricks

A charity that's as relevant today as at any time in the past. And one that I've supported beforehand and am glad to again.

A charity that's as relevant today as at any time in the past. <snip>

:agree: provided they spent the money on the cause instead of banking it ... £14.8m in the bank in 2008 sat doing nothing except safe guarding jobs for the boys!

Sincere apologies and no offence intended as I don't mean to knock the care and goodwill shown by anyone who is happy to support the charities ....... It's just a shame the so called charities don't have the same Ethos!

What a pity a thread such as this is disgracefully trashed by someone who is ignorant of the workings of service (and other) charities. I've been aware of the work of blesma since early in my 23 yrs service and have been aware of their work since leaving service.

Charities with on-going long term projects require funds in the bank to provide stability and consistency. Not to mention interest income although, sadly, that's not too great at present.

Lots of charities have large sums of cash in the bank. It allows them to have a regular, annual income, which they can then budget for and support ongoing projects. It also allows them to make larger purchases - for example a bank will allow them to make a proprty purchase with a mortgage if they know the charity have guaranteed income, it becomes much much harder if the income is by donations only as so many factors can affect the amount people donate.

It also gives them a contingency fund should they need to support a large cause at short notice.

It is in much the same way as your local council, who will be making cuts left right and centre, but will probably have millions (some councils have £50 million plus) sat in the bank for a contingency. Though there is a slightly differing argument that the councils should use the funds at this point in time!

Not sure this is the right thread for the comments above, but an understanding of how differing charities work. ANd with regards Jobs for the boys, if they are emplying ex servicemen in the running of the charity (or there families) does it matter whether the charity provides a Job for someone to help others, or gives them a donation? (please don't debate that on here though).

Good luck Julian!

Certainly a great cause. Shame I have elinchrom lights...

I've already put some in the pot, but I'll be sticking some old bits and bobs up for sale sometime this week for donations....crackin' effort by Julian and a great cause!!!

Hi Julian,

I know you have your old chair as a back up but if its not reliable how about asking a mobility company to loan you a new chair, providing you don't need one measured to fit as I know some people have made to measure chairs. I'm sure a large company would do that as they would get free advertising, its worth a try :)

Just had an idea, I have unlimited domain hosting for 12 months which means I can have as many domain names as I want and host them, if anyone who has or is going to donate to the marathon,i will give you a 12 month hosting with word press included minimum £10 donation towards the marathon. There are no email addresses available with this hosting package, all you have to do is get yourself a domain name and let me know what it's called and I will host it for you.

So it's a transparent donation, If you use the just giving site to donate then it's all open.

Thank you

Donation made and good luck Julian

Thank you mate, would you like to have a domain hosted on my web package? Along with the anonymous TP Member that has just donated.

The fund stands at £240 (plus the proceeds from the octabox), can we possibly get to £300 by the end of play today? :)

The fund now stands at £500 (thanks Kev for that most generous donation ) plus the proceeds from the octabox sale, if you can spare even a couple of quid please donate it and let's help Julian reach his goal and support this most worthwhile of charities :)

Christ almighty!! Paypal nearly took me bloody fingers off with that one

Ken thank you very much indeed. Thank you all again so far, I didn't expect to get this far so soon, I did a dummy run so to speak, found a few problems with the route, but hoping to over come those, awaiting news from 2 police forces.

Ken, Murph, Hugh thank you so much, would you care to take up the 1 year hosting of a website

Hey Julian,

A fantastically kind offer - but I'm already sorted for hosting so I'll politely decline :)

Hugh
