Please help, D60 or D90 which one?

It’s a choice between the D60 and D90 (as I said) and I just really not sure which one to go for and don’t want to make the wrong choice.

I want to get more involved with my photography but I fear that the D90 may have features on it I may never use?

Long and short of it is.

I have £800 to play with after spending £300 on getting a Nikon 24-120 VR lens repaired. I also have a Tamron 28-300mm lens which (apparently) won’t AF on the D60.

I need the camera to last me about 3/4 years, I would like it to have features on it I can maybe learn to use over time, but still want it to be an easy camera to use. (I don't want to spend all my time changing to many settings just to take a half descent shot)

And lastly, I want to do some close up stuff and will also be using the camera on days out with my OH and my friends and when I go to conventions (taking pics of people on stage).

Can anyone out there help give a little advice? (I know at the end of the day its my choice)

If you def want new then D90 all the way but if you don't mind going second hand (and there's a few flying about) then go for a D300, you wont regret it:thumbs:

D90 ... simple

Now why are you fretting about changing settings, every Nikon DSLR has 'P' setting, this stands for Program, which is another way of saying Auto.

me, well I worry about alost everything, especially when it comes to spending money and making the right choice..

D90 over the D60, choice made, D90 has the focus motor and better high ISO results.

One step at a time, go and purchase, then come back here if you get stuck on how to use it.
 
Definitely the D90, particularly if your 28-300 will autofocus on it (check with a shop).

If you want a body for 3-4 years then buy the best one you can afford. The D90 is probably easier to use than the D60 btw ;)

Thanks. How have you found the D90. Also how do you find the wieght with an extra lens attached.

I love it. It was a big step forward from my D40x (the predecessor to the D60) in every way e.g. better feel, better controls, better displays, better LCD viewing screen, more functionality without complexity, excellent image quality, terrific low light and high ISO performance...i could go on.

With regard to the weight it's not much heavier and tbh the lenses make more difference in this respect. I use a good Optech strap (£15 to £20) which makes it very comfortable to carry, even with the 18-200 on which is a heavy lens. I can and do sometimes carry it all day with no problems.
 
I have both the D60 and the D90, the D90 being a recent purchase.

The D60 is a great camera and I have nothing but praise for it. When I first bought it all I wanted was a basic entry level camera that would get me on the road to DSLR photography. I dont want to be a pro, I dont want to sell pictures, its a hobby.

The D60 certainly served its purpose and I have some pleasing results from it. It does have its limitations though, for example no auto exposure bracketing. Overall its a great camera and I would not try to put anyone off getting one.

The D90 is a different kettle of fish, in my opinion its a big step up and I am absolutely thrilled to bits with it. Its not cheap by my standards and I did ponder going for a 2nd hand D300 but in the end the D90 gives me what I want and I have the peace of mind that its guaranteed for the next two years.

To choose between the two is easy, the D90 every time but it all depends on what you want to achieve and how far you want to go with your photography.

Either way I am sure you will be happy.

Thanks nice to hear from someone who has dealt with both the D60 and D90. I think Im doing it for the same reasons as you, its more a hobbie then anything else, though would love to have some shots that were good enough to blow up and hang in my hall.

My friends all have point and shoot compact digital cameras I'm really the only one who likes taking shots all the time when out, so it needs to be something I can quickly learn how to use all the features off, especially as I have some friends who assume because someone has a DSLR they must be extreamly good at photography, and know exactly what they are talking about.
 
Well I went in the shop yesterday finally, and I bought the D90, after going on youtube and trying the camera out myself, I had to take it home with me, and did :)
