please feed the birds

No snow here, but the birds are costing me a fortune !!!
Haven't had a feeder up for a while due to a rat problem, just put it back in a different place, right next to the pond and they are flocking to it.
Popped into my local SCATS on the way home and got a huge bag of premium feed for £10 on special offer, that should last a couple of weeks if I'm lucky :eek:
I buy Tesco value sultanas and raisins, birds love them
First day I moved it I saw a coal tit on it, and camera no where in sight :bang::bang:
 
Someone mentioned rats. We used to have, well, rather a lot. My wife was feeding them too and, of course, they brought their children and all their relatives. I managed to persuade her to stop by pointing out that it was only a matter of time before one of the neighbours made a fuss and contacted the council, to get someone in to poison them. They've - sort of - moved on now, but we still get the odd visit, I'm quite glad to say!
 
I'm not sure whether to feed the birds this year or not. My neighbour has bought 4 cats in the last year that eat everything in sight and she never seems to have them in the house anymore. It's a shame as I like feeding them and had planned to set the camera up on a tripod at the window to get some photos for a college assignment. There's just nowhere I can put the feeder that doesn't have somewhere nearby for the neighbours cats to hide.
 
If I want to make my own suet balls, do I just buy the Atora Suet from a supermarket and use that?
 
there are 'recipes' on the web, but i think you can use Atora. Actually, i did buy some for that purpose and am going to investigate now ... i'm thinking I just melt it and put some seeds in it?
 
I'm going to grab some in Asda tomorrow with some raisons.

Have chopped up some nuts in a mini chopper and have got peanut butter at the ready.
 
We don't get many birds around by me sadly :(. Put some fat balls out before Christmas and they've not been touched. I'll swap them this weekend as they will start to go funny but if they don't get eaten next time then I might stop as I didn't get much interest last year either.

How do you spread the word to the feathered kind that there is food waiting if they just came to look.... Twitter? :D
 
Richard - if you have an iPhone you can get an app that mimics bird calls.

My brother has it and reckons it's great.
