Having recently got back into photography, I am considering setting up a website, but have little IT knowledge :shrug: and need something simple and easy to operate if I do set one up .. sticky has only helped a little so I think I will look at other togs sites and then ask individually. Any good suggestions - recommodations?.

Thanks

Malcolm

What would be the purpose of the site - advice will differ depending on;

Are you planning on running a business?

Do you just want to share your images with friends?

Is it simply a 'vanity project' but you'd like to contemplate a few sales too?

In essence there are lots of ways of putting photographs online, ranging from having a flickr account (free and simple) to self hosting a £10,000 integrated website and car wash (expensive and complicated) - and many steps in between, including a lot of free and simple to use ones.

Also, some web hosts like One&One have packages where they have templates and all you do is fill in the details etc.

Hi Phil,

quite right - more a vanity thing and perhaps I need to think smaller. Your web site is fantastic, but I am not really looking for the commercial side just yet, so the flicker or similar may be the answer. I appreciate your input.

Malcolm.

Thanks, I didn't really expect you to go and look at mine. :)
If you're just wanting to do a bit of sharing, Flickr is probably the answer.

Malcolm,

The advice given so far is spot on - if you're thinking of your own web address, with the option to go commercial, etc. I'd recommend www.clikpic.com - they provide all the techie part of the hosting starting at £35 per year (for up to 100 images or so). They can also sort a web address for £12 a year (you just need to decide on what you want!)

Worth a look.:shrug:

Good luck. Rod

Clikpic are actually extortionately expensive in terms of photo hosting. You're better off looking at either SmugMug or Zenfolio, both of which have unlimited hosting for less than the basic Clikpic account.

For us, as Brits, Zen wins slightly over SM, as they have a tie-in with a European based printer, which is obviously irrelevant if you intend to self fulfill.
